Police Remove Sheehan From Bush Speech

WASHINGTON - Cindy Sheehan finally got her invitation to see
President Bush again, but before she set eyes on him at the State of the Union address, Capitol Police removed her from the gallery overlooking the House chamber.

  The offense: her shirt, bearing an anti-war message and other "unlawful conduct," police said.
  
  Sheehan, the mother of a fallen soldier in
  Iraq who reinvigorated the anti-war movement, was handcuffed and charged with unlawful conduct, according to Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider. The charge was a misdemeanor and Sheehan was being released on her own recognizance, Schneider said.
  
  Schneider said Sheehan had worn a T-shirt with an anti-war slogan to Tuesday night's speech and covered it up until she took her seat. Police warned her that such displays were not allowed in the House chamber, but she did not respond, the spokeswoman said.
  
  Rep. Lynn Woolsey (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., gave Sheehan her only ticket earlier in the day ? Gallery 5, seat 7, row A ? while Sheehan was attending an "alternative state of the union" news conference by CODEPINK, a group pushing for an end to the Iraq war.
  
  "I'm proud that Cindy's my guest tonight," Woolsey said in an interview before the speech. "She has made a difference in the debate to bring our troops home from Iraq."
  
  Sheehan, wrapped in a bright pink scarf against the cold, protested outside the White House with a handful of others before heading to the Capitol for Bush's speech. There were no cameras around, but the small band faced the executive mansion and shouted repeatedly, "You're evicted! Get out of our house!"
  
  Sheehan was arrested in September with about 300 other anti-war activists in front of the White House after a weekend of protests against the war in Iraq. In August, she spent 26 days camped near Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, where he was spending a working vacation.

It wasn't just the t-shirt, there was other "unlawful conduct" unfortunitly that article doesn't say just what that is.  For all we know she could have started hitting people with a baseball bat in which case she should have been arrested.

I wouldn't get all in a huff until all the facts surface.

This was not a public event. She had to have a ticket, provided by a representative from California. She went in intending to disrupt and get attention, because It's All About Cindy.

Fucking facists.  How is it constitutional to have a law prohibiting protest in a public building at the center of our nation's political discourse.

KB, sorry you're tired of Cindy Sheehan, but shouldn't we be defending everyones rights?  Even if they are tiresome?

Sheehan might be a bitch that wears inappropriate t-shirts, but so am I.  I am going to wear an offensive t-shirt to a government run college and a government run high school to protest the government?s mail monopoly and violent work enviornment.

I don't see much difference between what she did and what Mike and Russell did.  She purposely violated what she thought was a stupid law and intended to get arrested to generate publicity.  That she may be running for the Senate against Boxer might add a bit of a twist to the reasons why she wants publicity notwithstanding . . .

If we spend all of our time defending the rights of freaks and enemies of liberty, then we won't have enough time to sufficiently defend our own freedoms.  I usually spend at least an hour a day doing something to defend liberty, but I think that I could spend all day every day fighting for freedom and still not do everything that I want to.  Cindy Sheehan is a freak who I prefer to ignore.  Defending the rights of commies, socialists, and "progressive" democrats is a waste of time.  Let them defend themselves.  As for me, I will work toward liberty and help primarily those with whom I agree.  My time is too valuable to waste on CS.

You just know that if our involvement in Iraq ended toomorrow and all of our people were home by the weekend ( a good thing), Sheehan's handlers would make her the figurehead for giving our rights, such as they are, over to the UN and every other stupid fucking idea out there!

- Mike and Russell didn't disrupt other people; Sheehan planned to do just that.
- Mike and Russell gave notice and planned for publicity; Sheehan planned an ambush.

I support everyone's right to wear whatever offense t-shirt they choose in any public venue. This was a closed event, not a public venue. If she'd been arrested for wearing the t-shirt while walking the public sidewalks outside the Capitol, I'd be outraged right along side you, especially if she was protesting a "no offensive t-shirts" law.

One other point, that law is no different then laws we have right here in NH that prohibit political signs more then X number of feet from polling places and things like that.

If she wanted to protest she could have stood outside holding any sign or wearing any shirt she wanted.  She instead was invited in to a PRIVATE event.  Then when asked to leave she refused.

There's no story here.
