Buddies instead of Karma

I was looking through my profile and noticed the "Edit Buddies" feature, I don't really know what it's for but it occured to me that it can be used instead of Karma. For example instead of showing your current karma next to each post it can show how many people have listed you as their buddy. This would significantly reduce the abuse of karma and would be a much better gauge of your presence on this board. Newbies would start out with 0 and as more people get to know them and start to trust/like them they will add them to their buddy list and their "buddy points" will grow.

Another option is to make karma transparent: you click on it and see exactly who applauded and smited you.  It could either be visible to the recipient alone, or to everyone.  That would do a lot to keep people honest, IMHO....
