That is so true ..... but it has changed to any questioning of the administration .... hasn't it.

wow that says it all.  The Constitution really is dead.

I don't know why he would feel spooked by such a thing. The 501(c)3 status is only jeopardized by partisan politicking, or endorsement of a candidate, or implied endorsement by attacking an opponent. Political positions and issues are fair game; candidates are not.

(Black churches have traditionally gotten a pass on this, even when hosting overt campaign rallies. When the FEC began investigating them on an equal footing, there were screams of racism and retaliation.)

The late, greatly kooky Dr. Gene Scott wouldn't allow tax exempt status for his University Cathedral in Los Angeles. He wanted to say whatever he wanted, about whomever he wished. The traditional argument against taxing churches is that it would give government power over churches. In reality, tax exemption gives the government far more power over what is said in a pulpit, than would be the case if they paid the same taxes as every other organization.

Pastor Garrett Lear of The Well Of Living Water in Wakefield, NH, was at Porc Fest and talked about this. He does not "register" with the IRS.

I don't think we necessarily need a "reverend". This is not a religious ceremony or something.

How the government controls churches!  That's why we don't have preachers leading the revolution like in 1776.

I love this idea, and I'm really bummed that I'm already committed to manning a table at the Vermont LP convention that day.   :(  But if you think the wake will extend into the evening, I could swing by Keene on my way home.  By the way, what's all this talk of a "wake" taking place in a church with a reverend? I thought a wake was a party?  The funeral service takes place in the church.

My opinions, FWIW:

  • YES, GET THE HEARSE!!!
  • If possible, make the coffin full-size; it will look more impressive being carried by 4-6 pallbearers
  • either get everyone to wear the "R.I.P. Constitution" T-shirts, or get everyone to dress in black, for maximum visual effect
  • maybe encourage people to lay a rose on the corpse as they view it
  • I'm so surprised you guys are talking about burial.  I would have thought a FUNERAL PYRE was more the Underground's style!   ;)  (You could remove the constitution before burning the coffin, if Kat wants to keep it)
  • maybe organize an LTE campaign to spread the word about this around NH in advance.  I'm willing to write to the Nashua paper. I'll bet you could find volunteers for several other towns, too

Right now the wake is a party at a restaurant or a church. We could make it extend to our house for a smaller group.
The funeral service would take place in the central square.
I like the hearse idea.
The bigger the coffin the better, but it will cost Lloyd more.
We should definitely wear black.
Rose would be good.
I wasn't talking burial. Maybe someone else. I don't have a backhoe and land handy.

Yeah, why don't you ask the Baptist Temple in Indianapolis how well that works for them.

Church supporters should have kept bidding at auction - with no intention to buy but to just bollix the proceedings. This should be done at any tax auction.

Quite a brilliant mind, but... yeah. Not your mainstream kinda preacher.

More than a year after his death, the church websites still contain no mention of his passing. His widow, a former porn star, is now --forgive me-- head pastor.

LMAO oh  I just love a cheap sex shot joke.

Russell Kanning

I wonder if we will find a brave pastor or if we will perform the service ourselves.
