In looking at the desire for regions, states, etc. to claim independence, I wonder whether anyone has run across any justifications, so called, for keeping the "whole" intact, beyond the obvious desire for those in power to remain in power. I say, if a city, region, state, etc. wants independence, great. Anyonehave any thoughts on this?

If your looking to a state I think you are looking at secession. I have some articles/ links on that if you would like. If you are talking about local areas, it is possible to unincorporate, although towns usually do this to reincorporate in another country/district etc... Interestingly enough a place in VT wants to unincorporate and reincorporate in NH. The town approved it with a vote, but I believe both VT and NH legislatures have to approve it as well.

I really like the idea of breaking things into smaller pieces

The Civil War was fought over this issue, and the death toll for that was beyond measure.  I'd rather not see that happen again.  It would be far less bloody to simply push for change from within, to get power shifted from the Fed back to the states, where the power was designed to be in the first place.  It will take a lot longer of course, but the last thing the US needs to do right now, since we are the only Superpower and hated by the world for it, is to weaken ourselves and invite destruction from without by instigating massive upheaval from within in this way.  We would risk losing the entire nation and gain nothing but our own destruction.

Did anyone see a post by me here following Russell's? Or thereabouts.  In it I would have referred to his wanting to break things up and then went on to more serious matters.  I seem to have lost it, but I know I wrote it.  I don't know if it just never actually showed up or if it did and got deleted by someone.  It shouldn't have been inflammatory to anyone in this thread as far as I know.  :)

Maybe did a preview without posting?

Nope it isn't posted anywhere.  I bet I did preview it and then it didn't actually get posted.   :-X  Too bad; I had written a thoughtful few paragraphs on the whole secession idea and now my mind is mush and I don't remember exactly what I said.   :-\  That is life.  Maybe I will be inspired again.  Sorry for the confusion.  I couldn't imagine I was censorable.   ;D  Or that you all would feel the need to seceed from me.   ;)

Well carry on!   :)

I'm pretty sure I do all of the deleting and I didn't delete anything of yours.
