Don't underestimate the terrorist threat.  There really are groups out there who want to destroy us and to dismiss them is to blind yourself to a very real danger.  There are a great many people who do not see the liberal movement as a threat either and think the idea of anyone in America trying to destroy our freedom from the inside out is nonsense.  However, the evidence is right before their eyes should they choose to look.  So is the terrorist threat, and that is a far more tangible thing.

However, I could not agree more that the National ID bill is awful!  We already HAVE a national ID card, it's called social security (which should be abolished outright).  And the states all have driver's licensing programs that are easily searchable by the Fed, so there is no reason for anything else.  It's just an obnoxious excuse for yet more Federal control and spending, and I for one, don't buy it.  More border control, racial profiling, and rounding up the illegal immigrants and sending them packing would do far more for our security and my piece of mind.

Co-sponsors on National ID bill:

Rep Bass, Charles F. [NH-2] - 1/26/2005
Rep Bradley, Jeb [NH-1] - 1/26/2005

It appears what happened yesterday on this bill was another resolution was passed enforcing speedy discussion of HR 418...limiting debate to 1 hour 40 minutes.  They should return to HR 418 today.

Our own reps are sponsoring this!!   >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Maybe Jeb and Charlie are just trying to find another way for NH to refuse more federal funds:

The legislation would withhold related funding unless states allow federal officials and law enforcement authorities at the state and local levels to access information contained in their driver's license and ID card databases and to share that information with the Mexican and Canadian governments.
Quoted from Townhall.com article

Or, maybe they want NH driver's licenses to have to say they may not be accepted by any federal agency:

The proposal also requires that any state not meeting the requirements mark its driver's licenses and ID cards with the words "may not be accepted by any Federal agency for any official purpose." It also requires special colors or markings, as mandated by DHS, to distinguish the documents as federally unacceptable.
Quoted from Townhall.com article

No, I think I give them WAAAAY too much credit.

Although as long as they keep supporting the Surveillence State, the UK flag and "Gen. Arnold" might be more appropriate.

I was watching the O'Reilly factor last night and there was a congressman James Sensenbrenner who was talking about the Bush's plans to not fund the requested 2000 border patrol agents, they'd only do 200 and how that wouldn't even count for the attrition from last year. He said there was a 3 mile hole in a border fence in CA and the feds told the border patrol to "stay away" from the hole, in other words, allowing immigrants in freely. Personally, I can't believe we have a president who claims to have the homeland's best interests in mind but flat out refuses to solve any of the border problems. He doesnt have a problem funding the Iraq war but he can't spring for proper border troops....this is an outrage

I have to disagree with you on this one, Rodinia. I believe we should open our borders. Let anyone in who desires. Just check them in a the border. There is little hope of catching terrorists at the borders. I mean, how many miles of border do we have? Ten thousand, maybe? Terrorists will get in. What ever happened to the "give me your huddled masses who long to be free" attitude this country used to have.
Hopefully the welfare system will collapse under the weight of the increased demand, and will be scrapped.

I have no problem with letting people in...LEGALLY.  We let people in as long as they go through the proper channels.  That way we can keep out people we honestly don't want coming in, such as criminals (not the political kind).  We have way to many people coming over here, working under the table, then taking that money home with them and not paying into the system while they use our services such as schools for their kids, food stamps and welfare.  We willl and have cought terrorists on the border.  Yes, if they really want to get in, they will but do we really have to make it easier for them?  Do you go to the ghetto and leave your car unlocked because if they want to break in they will so why bother to even trying to deter them?  I'd rather make it as hard as possible myself and keep people from being here illegally.

House approved electronic ID card.  Forget the CA schoolkids with RFID, we're all about to have them.

New Hampshire already has an "electronic machine readable ID" I don't think it is currently used but my last two licenses have had a magnetic strip on the back.

Just more "feel good" legislation that will only hassle the people that you don't need to worry about.
