I was doing the first cleaning of the Keene Free Press highway section (101 from Main St. to Marlborough) and was thinking about the old stone railroad bridge that crosses Otter Brook. The parking area was pretty dirty, but it didn't take long to bring it up to acceptable.
This is the area that Steve Lindsey was advocating that the city "preserve" or something similar. I was thinking that we could turn it into a non-governmental park (no rules, no taxes) by cleaning it up and adding features over time. It is part of a bike trail on the old tracks that passes through downtown Keene. It is also popular with rock climbers who use the bridge for practice. It is wild and undeveloped, but it has some interesting features that we will have to check out.
What do you guys think of the idea and what should we call it?

KBCraig

Definitely not "People's Park"... too many connotations of communism.

I like the idea, though. An "open source park"... use it for free, add to it what you'd like to see. "Gnu park", maybe?

Tom Sawyer

Neat idea Russell... I'd bring tools and help.

Volunteer Park (maybe)

Russell Kanning

Hmmmmm
Sometime we could go for a hike/wander to check it out. I saw a couple of beaver dams from the road and the brook looks great from the bridge. It is a little dangerous for kids since there are no guardrails. It is a place where you have to take responsibility for yourself.
re: People's Park ..... it is like throwing a bone to the socialists in town. I don't think it would hurt. We are sharing the park.
I like Volunteer Park.
I wonder if they have a name for the bridge already.

Oh, man! I just googled "otter brook NH" and came up with www.recreation.gov! These people just keep spending our money like it was theirs!

I meant the web site itself. I keep finding these gov web sites that should be - and probably are being - done by private concerns! Stay out of my pockets!

Yeah, the real world is full of dangers.

"Mama always told me not to look into the eye's of the sun
But mama, that's where the fun is"

I've seen the bridge driving by and been interested in it. The historical society would probably have info on the bridge. It would be fun to explore the area. :)

Not that it will do any good but I sent a comment to the web site:

I wish you government types would keep your hands out of my pockets! A web site such as this should be done by private concerns. It is this type of nickel-and-dime spending of our tax dollars that is creating big government.

Maybe we could have a really big fire pit in our unauthorized park.
It could have all sorts of nicknames:
Anarchy Park
Bonfire Park

It figures burning would have to be involved. ;D

Pat K

Start the fire, and gather folks around, call it the circle of liberty NH style.

If you build it Tim will come.  ;D
