This is "endless whining", because I can't afford any of these toys.

Have you been paying attention to the goodies being announced at NAB?

17" MacBook Pro
Panasonic commits to H.264
Apple, others support Canon XL H1 HD camera

*drool!*

You just did this to make me unhappy didn't you... :'(

More stuff I can't have... I'm trying to enjoy my 20" iMac (which is still very nice).

As for video gear I really need to invest in some wireless audio stuff.

But, there are a lot of other things on the priority list. Kid, house etc. :)

I upgraded my B&W G3/350 to G4/733, but I'm still running 10.2.8 on it. I'm saving for an Intel Mini (the Mac kind, not the Lex kind). It just doesn't make sense to spend $200 upgrading this one to 10.4 and iLife, when those things are included on a $700 Mac Mini, and this computer would be only marginally functional with those apps.

This old B&W will make a great iTunes and file server, maybe some home automation stuff, leaving me free to scream along on the Mini.

I've been enjoying playing with GarageBand that comes with iLife. Pretty cool program.

Are you up on the home automation stuff for the mac? I'm interested in setting up our ol' grape iMac for that purpose.

GarageBand and iMovie are the main things I want. I also want to get Delicious Library to catalog our music, DVDs, and books.

I studied it thoroughly about 8-10 years ago, but a lot has changed since then (like serial ports disappearing). Back then, Sand Hill Engineering was the big dog, but their automation site hasn't been updated since 2002. A lot of new options are out there since the patent opened up. I've noticed them fly by on the radar, I just haven't taken the time to study them.

Here's a Macworld article about Indigo and Xtension on older Macs.

Tom Sawyer

Cool thanks for the Macworld link that should get me started in the right direction.

I'd like a Mac, but there's no way in hell I could afford one.

I'll just be happy with my gateway laptop, cruddy 5 megapixel camera, and iPod video :)

All that stuff would probably fit on your bike better than a Mac.

Lloyd Danforth

Roger! Congradulations on getting your own topic, even if it is more about gear and not much about you ;D
You know you've got Gravitase when they make your topic 'sticky'.

Kat Kanning

And Lloyd is, apparently, an expert on making things sticky.

The laptop is a lot bigger than this Mac:

Yeah when I saw the thread in the Endless Debate and Whining section I thought oh crap what have I done this time. ;D

I've been the topic of discussion before, sometimes good sometimes not so good. :icon_pirat:

Kat Kanning

Oh you guys should hear the story I heard about Roger!   :o

Tom Sawyer

Damn I do feel honored... although I have a long way to go before I get sticky status like my mentor Lloyd. ;D

dead_hobbit

I'm talking about a MacBook (Apple Laptop), not a normal Mac. Anyone who knows how to save up money can afford a Mac Mini.

But their new laptop... at something like 2700$ -that's what i'd want! :P
