Rosie the Riveter

Mom turned 81 this year, so I gave her Atlas Shrugged.  She'll have it read in a couple of weeks at her rate.

It is a very nice book, with many delightful scenes, a lot of great dialog.  However, for people who find it chalky and hard to ingest, I suggest The Fountainhead.  According to her friend Barbara Branden, Ayn found writing Atlas to be very difficult.  She kept reviewing her work and editing it.  After I learned this in 2000, I had to read the book again, and did find some of the writing a bit over-worked.

For similar themes in a much easier to read novel, I like The Probability Broach by L. Neil Smith.  Very satisfying on many levels, and it has numerous sequels.  And it comes in a graphic novel with art by Scott Bieser, even easier to get through.

As far as film actors go, I would put Val Kilmer in the role of Ragnar.  If you saw his film version of "The Saint" you know he can do the accents.

Although John, Ragnar, and Francisco were colleagues in a college class together, it is not entirely clear to my recollection that they were the same age.  Francisco and Dagny were, though, as I recall.  Antonio Banderas might make a fun Francisco.  I could actually go with Quentin Tarantino as John Galt, but I'd worry about the longer speech.

I've utterly no problem with Angelina Jolie as Dagny.  From what I've read of her life, Ayn was writing Dagny as a self-portrait, in some ways.  And, of course, Ouray, Colorado was the setting for Galt's Gulch.  That would make a grand on-location shoot.

Regards,

Jim

It would be fun if your pee turned the colour of the stuff you drank, but nope, just somewhere between clear and yellow every time :(

That would be fun before taking a drug test (where they pour blue dye in the toilet to make sure you don't scoop out water).

It probably would, but I don't take drug tests.
