For those who didn't see the other message, the server crashed and we're missing posts from yesterday.  The forum nazis are not out to get you  ;D

Tom Sawyer

Thanks for taking care of the forum Kat. Kind of 24/7 ain't it.

d_goddard

Just cause I'm nosey, and because I care about this forum....

* Is the server hosting this forum fully backed up from time to time? If so, by what process?
* Are the backups stored in a separate physical location to the main computer?
* Are the server's disks running RAID-5?

Spoken like someone that is swimming hard to keep things going for the rest of us idiots folks. :)

Karma to Kat... plus got to come up with a donation for the running of things. I'll be able to by the end of the month.

Once my bumpersticker deal breaks even I want to donate money to the running of this site.

I'll take a bumpersticker. How much are they? The NHfree.com oval right?

I'm gonna assume the answer, then, to all the questions is "no".
Which means it's just a matter of time before every post ever made on this site goes bye-bye forever.

Unless of course the site is run on a hosted service...
Does the box that serves the site physically reside somewhere you own? ie, can you walk over and reboot it? Or do you just connect to a computer that lives who-knows-where?

Thanks Zork for the info!

Kat, since you're using a database (well, mySQL, close enough) it's really really important to take mySQL backups, since the normal backups do not work for databases!!!
Please, please, please do setup a cron job to back up the database.
If you do only one thing, make it this:
http://www.he.net/faq/mysql.html#Anchor1020

The resulting "db.sql" file will back up properly, and if the server crashes horribly, at least the backup will be useful. It would be ideal to then ftp the db.sql file to your local PC at home, or to some other hosting site, just to be safe.

Other good stuff from the Hurricane Electric FAQs:

Is there any possibility that the server we are on will be down for an extended period of time say one to two weeks?
No. We do hard disk to hard disk backups and we keep hardware spares available.

I lost/deleted a file on my site by mistake. Do you keep backups?
We do back up data on our servers nightly, but these backups are run and kept for administrative purposes. We recommend that you keep backup copies of your site on your local computer, as the servers back up their data nightly, overwriting the previous backup.
