Well I cant celebrate that yet.

My birthday is a celebration of my independence from the womb. ;)

Cinco de Mayo kept the North from losing the Civil War. The Mexicans defeated the French so they could not supply the South during our Civil War. We should be celebrating with them! >:D

Sounds like a reason NOT to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.  The civil war and it's aftermath did more consolidate federal power than any other point in American history.

Exactly. If the CSA had succeeded in seceeding ( ;D ), NH secession would be far more realistic. Then again, the USA might not be so objectionable that NH would even need to seceed.

Not really. Two countries claimed it, neither really wanted it, they were tired of getting jacked around by both sides, so they said, "We quit!"

In a time when it could takes months to get to Pittsburg, nobody in either country paid much attention.

It's still a fun piece of our history. I don't think it took months to get there. As I recall from my history class, passing through the notch was the biggest hassle because the roads up here were poorly kept. My town, Carroll, was almost completely unsettled at the time, and Whitefield was for the most part too until the mills came along. Lancaster was the first big stop along the route, which is about 30 miles past the notch. It was a major farming town, and the towns between Lancaster and Colebrook have all been mainly farming towns, up until nearly all the small farms died (they are still alive just over the river in VT). The trip to Colebrook is another 40 or so miles, but was on better kept roads and through settled towns. Once you're in Colebrook, Pittsburg is only a few miles.

I kind of wish I could see what life was like back then first hand.

If you've ever had to use an out house at 3 am when its 40 below zero, wind blowing 40  and snowing to beat the band, then you have a pretty good idea of what life was like back then.

Solar-Powered Outhouse

Here stands the brand new outhouse, a lovely thing indeed
Though it wasn't built for pretty, and it wasn't built for speed
It was built for just one purpose, there's no need to explain
There's just one place to sit upon, the meaning should be plain
I built the thing with surplus stuff, it all just lay about
I cut some vents way up on top, so the flies could all get out
I put a window in the north to look at West White Pine
Real early in the morning when the sun begins to shine
There's a mirror on the wall inside, so all the pretty girls
Can fuss about or fix their face or curl their pretty curls
Posted here and there are jokes to lighten matters up
And right at hand, a little place to hold your coffee cup
There's lots of books and magazines to help you pass the time
And a paper pad and pencil if you feel the need to rhyme
If you ever have the urge to defecate at night
A little tug upon the string will provide you with some light
'Cause we all know that crapping in the dark is never fun
For in the dark it's hard to tell when the paperwork is done
So welcome to my outhouse, come in and have a sit
It's a real good place to spend some time if you need to take a shit!

I can't think of any reason to celebrate the North winning the war. I could celebrate the day Lincon got shot instead.
