:oI  just had an interesting encounter a few minutes ago after a particularly bad week for liberty(hb 1582).I was watching a dvd and heard a noise. My pitbull cowered in the corner.I looked outside and there was my trash can on its side, out in the yard.I thought racoons.I went outside...well,it was one big ass bear.I am glad that I was armed and more glad that he went the other way.
So,does anyone know how to bearproof a garbage can?

Electrify it?   Either that or spray it with ammonia a lot.

Hanging it from a tree like a food cache might be impractical.

I think I'd keep it in the garage/basement/shed/wherever, until garbage day.

If that's not possible, then bear-proof garbage can designs are available. Check with the U.S. Forest Service; they have pretty good ones. They're probably made by UNICOR. If so, they're not available for purchase by the public. But, they might be made by contractors, or the specs might be available for you to make or have made.

Be prepared to pour a concrete slab to bolt down the can, and spend several hundred dollars to have it fabricated.

Or, just keep it inside until garbage day. ;)

God knows we can't be letting just every average joe walk around with a bear-proof garbage can.

My idea involves a nice new Bear rug.........

It's not a restricted product; UNICOR serves a restricted market.

UNICOR is the trade name of Federal Prison Industries, Inc. Most federal prisons have a factory, and those factories' goods can only be sold to government customers. This is to avoid unfair competition with the private sector.

I don't know that USFS trashcans are made by UNICOR. Having spent several days last week in a USFS campground with "bear proof" trash cans, I have to say that they were better qualitiy than I would expect from UNICOR. Probably local contract.

Bears will tear apart big plastic trash cans and smash metal ones. It happened to us many times, we had to walk around the yard picking up garbage for hours.

The best solution is to keep the garbage indoors, especially if you have a breezeway or shed.

There are some things that will repel bears, I believe hot sauce is one of those things... Google can help with that better than I can.

At Lake Tahoe, we had a little wooden shed just big enough to hold two garbage cans.  It got pretty scratched up, but basically deterred them.

Would urine or hair clippings work?  I know that deer will avoid human scents. My great-grandmother used to surround her apple trees with a ring of pie plates to scare off the deer.

i'm thinking that in Juneau, AK where they have quite a few bears, they use bungie cords to keep the bears from taking the lids off the garbage cans.

And a quote that stood out on the page:
Remember! A Fed Bear is a DEAD bear! Please be responsible when living in "Bear Country".

Don't they like those Federal Bears? ;D
