The day after I was clearing brush on our NH property I got big blisters and horrible itchiness on my arms.
Three weeks of torment followed, Whew! Glad that's almost over.
Pharmacist says it's poison ivy. Found out what it looks like, here, so I can avoid it...

But can I remove it from our wooded acre in Shangri La?
Do I need an axe, flame thrower, armored bulldozer?

Thespis

I found this page:
http://www.poison-ivy.org/html/faq.htm

There's info on removing poison ivy about halfway down the page.

Well, there's a business for someone...goat rentals.

Errr . . . there's also non-goat suggestions to the left of the goat column too.  :icon_pirat:

Don't they rent goats along with the videos in NH? ;)

KBCraig

It's pretty persistent stuff. Very hard to kill out.

fourthgeek

most people call them molotov cocktails. i prefer "freedom bottles" myself.

though rumoredly, gasoline + styrofoam = pure joy in napalm form.

There's a few llama farms up here

Some people recommend Ortho Brush B Gone.

Poison ivy, like any weed, is just about impossible to erradicate from your property.  Your best bet, when you're planning to be out where you suspect poison ivy/oak/sumac to be, is to wear an ivy blocker.  I use a lotion made by Skin-So-Soft, and haven't gotten poison ivy once while using it.  If you unexpectedly find yourself exposed to it, I'd reccomend a product called Tecnu.  It's an oil you spread over affected areas on your body to block the poison from spreading, or if you get it before symptons start, from getting poison ivy all together.  Just spread the oil on the affected area, and then wash off with soap and water

I used to get it real bad and got shots to get rid of it. I started putting Clorox on it and it dried it up and made it dissapear faster than the shots.

one word... GLOVES

Yes, gloves.......and then be carefull not to touch the outside of any gloves that have touched poison Ivy.

I have eradicated PI.  Cought Poison Ivy in the third week of February once... eradicating it, by digging up the roots and removing all of them I could from the area.  I kept it covered with mulch and every time something green stuck it's head out I snipped it off. PI stayed away!

Don't touch your shoes or pants leg if you have walked in it. It is easy to catch off the fur of a cat or dog.

They used to say that if you got into it, you should wash it as soop as possible with Brown soap, like 'Octogon'.  Worked for me a few times.

If you're not going to grow anything in that area, you could just spread some road salt over the patch. It worked for Carthage.

Wow, messy.
:confused1:
They probably use clam chowder here in New England.
