Lots of info here:

http://www.psychsearch.net/teenscreen.html

A Front Group for the Psycho-Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex

TeenScreen is a very controversial so-called "diagnostic psychiatric service" aka suicide survey; done on children who are then referred to psychiatric treatment. The evidence suggests that the objective of the psychiatrists who designed TeenScreen is to place children so selected on psychotropic drugs.

"It's just a way to put more people on prescription drugs," said Marcia Angell, a medical ethics lecturer at Harvard Medical School and author of "The Truth About Drug Companies." She said such programs will boost the sale of antidepressants even after the FDA in September ordered a "black box" label warning that the pills might spur suicidal thoughts or actions in minors. (The New York Post, December 5, 2004)

TeenScreen is based on the thoroughly discredited "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders".

Parents should always read up and know what the drugs they give their children do, their effects, etc (NOT the drugs their children are given, they should always be in control).

I know the DSM-IV is often out of date and controversial, but I've never heard it called "thorougly discredited"...?

basically don't drug your kids, there is a small segment of kids who do have a need.
Most kids do not, and the schools convience the parents often with threats to put their kids on drugs.  After all a sedated child is much easier to control and manipulate.

It's completely against the nature of boys ages 6-10 to sit quietly and listen for up to 3 hours at a stretch. They don't learn well when forced to do so. Yet, that's exactly what regimented schools expect of them.

My 15 and almost-11 year old sons were diagnosed ADHD. Against my wishes, their mom did medicate them, because they couldn't get along in school without it. My position is that their school difficulties were not because they needed medication, but because the school is set up in a way that is contrary to everything that is interesting to young boys.

She eventually took them off all medication, because she saw that the side effects were just unacceptable. They were zombies, and not themselves.

My 3 year old would almost certainly be diagnosed ADHD if he went to public school. He won't, though. Different mom; one who agrees with me!

Tom Sawyer

Good for you Kevin...

Today Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn would be forced to take these drugs. Almost every adventure they had would have run them afoul of today's authorities. I believe it is part of a systematic plan to neuter the males in our society.

One of the many reasons these educators will not get their hands on my child.

This is a message to Roger Grant. I wanted to bring to your attention a site called blip.tv. I've been trying to mod up Denis and Seth on slashdot and haven't had much success. But, I heard about blip.tv and after looking it over it seems a perfect place to post your videos to bring more attention to FSP. I apologize folks...I know this is off subject...but Roger...you email address isn't available.
As far as the topic...'Just say no' would be applicable. Not to pot:)  but to all the 'legal' drugs the kids are given.

Y'all might be interested in the works of a fellow libertarian, Thomas Szasz. While I don't agree with all of his conclusions, his works pretty much expose most of psychiatry as a sham.

No.

Here's what happens: someone who is suicidally depressed usually doesn't have the energy to go through with it. (Depression has been called "anger without enthusiasm", which is very accurate.)

So, when someone starts taking antidepressants, they start perking up. The symptoms are alleviated, but not the underlying cause. They suddenly have energy, and can focus on goals. If one of their goals has been suicide, they start to see how they could do it successfully.

In my line of work, we have to be very alert to suicide warning signs and prevention. One of the big danger signals is when someone who has been very depressed suddenly perks up. Someone who is overwhelmed, in despair, just doesn't see any way out of their problems. But if they decide that suicide is the solution, it's like a burden has been lifted. They now have a way out, in their mind at least. They often perk up and are happy, because dying gives them something to live for. Sounds crazy, but we're not talking about rational thought.

I have said this over and over and I am glad to hear it from someone else.

Back in Texas a woman that worked at the minimart asked me to spend a little time with her son because he was having problems in school. I did an he was fine with me after a little while. She wanted me to go to school with her because the principle and guidance counselor had another meeting with her. I happen to have the DSM and he only met one of the ten criteria fo ADHD. The one criteria he met was he had a behavioral problem.  I quickly found out that every kid in the school that had a behavioral problem was diagnosed with ADHD. They had one psychiatrist that the school would send all of them to and he said every one had ADHD. They then give one drug after another to them until they didn't bother the school any more. They say this proves they had ADHD but it doesn't. They don't really understand ADHD and can't prove anyone actually has or doesn't have ADHD. They are just experimenting with drugs that they arn't sure how they actually work on the brain. When they kid doesn't bother the teacher anymore they say he is cured.

I think you'll find most people on this forum agree with that sentement DC.
