Has anyone run across books or websites that deal with raising livestock, chickens, goats, cows, pigs, for beginners?

They are all easy to raise just give them food, water, a clean place (except pigs like to roll in mud due to the fact they don't sweat" and some physical activity and you will have happy animals. Raising livestock is like raising a dog or cat which if you believe the asians are great eating also.

But what kind of food, and how much? What about spotting sickness or disease?

You want to keep the amount of livestock to the bare minimum. A problem that might arise with too many animals is that you spend too much time taking care of them and not enough actually living your life or enjoying the fruits of your labor. There is a very good section on this in "Living the good life" book which should be required reading for anyone interested in self-sufficiency.

One of the links yesterday, or maybe it was a link from a link, talked about getting into homesteading. He claimed that going vegetarian was the easiest step to take. It avoided a world of complications with livestock that the newbie might have trouble with. The next easiest things to add usually are fish and chickens, then working your way up to the heavy committment of cattle.
