Al Gore Suggests Carbon Tax at Wal-Mart Presentation.
By Amanda Griscom Little, Grist Magazine, July 19, 2006.

?The occasion was an environmental strategy meeting of some 800 Wal-Mart execs, managers, suppliers, and partners, where the heads of the corporation's various divisions -- from seafood and textiles to transportation and packaging -- outlined their respective green agendas? Mid-afternoon brought a screening of An Inconvenient Truth... [Gore spoke to the audience afterwards and] waded into politics. He called the partisan bickering in Washington ?pitiful, seriously pitiful,? and mocked national leaders for ?borrowing a ton of money from China to buy a ton of oil from Saudi Arabia to burn it in ways that destroy the inhabitability of the planet -- not a good pattern!? He also called for a radical overhaul of the American tax system: ?We should sharply reduce payroll taxes and make it all up in CO2 taxes so the low- and middle-income people don't bear the cost burden of this big transition in energy sources.?"

It sounds promising.  As we know, the LP just said that pollution taxes are better than income taxes and I agree.

specifically Thomas Knapp (founder of Boston Tea Party faction) and Carl Milsted (founder of the Libertarian Reform caucus) are calling for them except Knapp says they aren't a tax if they are shared with your neighbors rather than with the government.

Oh, I don't trust anything Knapp says or writes.  Frankly (  :) ), he scares me.  Maybe I need to think more about this...

That sucks, I'm made of carbon

(I am reluctant to ever trust a democrat on taxes)

What about poor people who commute?  Won't they be paying the 'carbon tax?'  Also poor people aren't the ones buying the Prius  or Honda Civic hybrid.

Well, the smart car would cost like $8,000 new if it was sold in massive amounts in America.  I'm sure an American or Korean car company could make something similar for even less.  If poor gas mileage was taxed, people could use these cars for city commutes.  Also, the Prius and Honda Civic are not expensive.  They are under $25,000, right?  And they would cost less if more people demanded them to avoid the 'carbon' taxes.

The way I look at it.  Taxes are bad.  Taxing someone because they work is just evil.  Taxing someone because they pollute seems less bad.  The LP agrees :)  Cuz, you know, pollution is bad.

This idea reminds me of the 50-50 plan proposed by John Anderson way back in 1980. If I remember correctly, he called for a 50 cent increase in the federal gasoline tax coupled with a 50% reduction in the social security payroll tax.

a geo-lib ahead of his time...

Pat K you are the voice of reason. We have a few people on this forum who are socialists who wouldn't know what freedom was if it hit them in the face. They are always trying to organize us, reorganize us, tax us, or harangue us to death!

Ah I wish I were still back camping and not home working..  >:(

The word 'taxes' and 'better' should not even be in the same sentence!!!

Only Mr Grennon would believe that the oppinion of an avowed socialist and earth worshiper like Al Gore would mean anything to us.
