I really don't understand this... I'm pretty sure selling Playboys isn't illegal in NH... am I reading the law wrong?

Playboy is not obscene. It can be sexual, even pornographic, without meeting the legal standard of "obscene".

       (a) When applying the contemporary standards of the county within which the obscenity offense was committed, its predominant appeal is to the prurient interest in sex, that is, an interest in lewdness or lascivious thoughts;

       (c) It lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value.

The definition of patently offensive is left to the legislators and the courts, but generally means that the 'average person in the community' would get their panties in a bunch over the content. So scatology DVDs are out of line? What about ones that feature anal sex? I wonder if some communities would have a problem with that type of content.

Some communities have a problem with anything other than missionary-style heterosexual acts between married persons, and that only for the purpose of procreation.  (There are still states where it's illegal to have oral sex with your own wife.)

This sounds like another law we've got to get repealed.
