You have to register with the state when getting kegs, y'know!

Okay, so:  car tabs - a flat fee for the state?

And then there may also be a property tax to the township?

Do towns have websites so we can look these things up?  We're still choosing a town to live in and this could be another deciding factor.

I just bought an Explorer from my aunt in Montana and since we're moving in less than six weeks, I'm trying to get away with not registering the thing in Washington (and paying sales tax in the hundreds + truck licensing fees) and then having to register it again six weeks later in NH.

When we moved from SC and registered the car in NH, we got a refund from SC  by mailing the plates and proof of NH registration to SC.

Check it out. Also, I am not sure that the town portion of the "registration" differs from town to town. When we moved from Manchester to Derry, my budgeted amount was right on. The clerk in Manchester explained the calculation very well, starting with a book base "purchase" amount and applying a decreasing percentage year by year until a minimum percentage is reached. So what matters is what make model and year your car is and not what you paid for it.

What did differ greatly between Manchester and Derry was our car insurance rate. Even though now we commute to MA in much worse traffic, the rate is lower.

The state has a site:
http://www.state.nh.us/revenue/municipalities/ms-new.htm

The first two links on the page are the most useful ones.

The People's Republic of CA keep sending me bills.  I called and the said I don't live in CA anymore.  The woman replied have you told us in CA?  I said how do you think you got my new address?
My late fees are now more than the reg fee.

I think I'll pass on the beer, thanks.  I don't understand how anyone can drink that nasty stuff!  Or coffee, for that matter...

However, I can't imagine vehicle registrations being any worse than they are here in Arizona... Last year, my registration was $100... plus $25 for the mandatory emissions testing.  Back in Ohio, I had only paid something like $25 total.  :-\

Cathleen, I am in awe of your true miserliness.  You are my new hero...ine...  ;)

I am also thinking of buying a plot of land and plopping a mobile home or RV on it for the time being; Property ownership, comfortable place to live, cheap payments, lots of room for improvements, good privacy, smaller taxes...  and in a number of properties, it seems that utilities are available.

Has anyone tried that approach?  Any pitfalls I should look out for?

Aside from that, thanks for the info, guys!  Good stuff, although I'd welcome more.  I guess I'm just greedy for more numbers...  ;D

Thank you. You don't even want to know what I call coffee and beer!

Now tea on the other hand...

I am planning to budget a total of 3 months of expenses in the above chunk, in preparation for a possibly difficult job search.

Good idea. Six months of expenses are desirable if you're starting a business. Three months are plenty for work unless the economy is really bad.

When the economy is bad, I doubt New Hampshire will suffer as much as the rest of the country, or take as long to recover, depending of course on how the bureaucrats and politicians react to the conditions.
