Free Stater Kanning sentenced

By GARRY RAYNO
Union Leader Staff

Concord ? Free State member Russell Kanning was sentenced yesterday by a U.S. District Court Magistrate to time served in the Strafford County House of Correction. Kanning was charged July 27 with distributing materials at a U.S. government agency in Keene and was arrested at his home Aug. 1 when he failed to appear in federal court July 28 to answer the charge.

He and a half dozen supporters attempted to hand out flyers to Internal Revenue Service employees encouraging them to quit their jobs.

Kanning specifically opposes funding the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

"Hitler had a revenue department too!" was the heading of the flyer, which shows pictures of Adolf Hitler and George W. Bush and lists alleged similarities between the two, including 'destroy freedom for security.'"

At yesterday's sentencing, Kanning failed to answer U.S. Magistrate James R. Muirhead's question if he had reviewed the sentencing report, until the judge threatened to call a recess until Kanning read the report.

Muirhead then sentenced him to time served with no probation and no fine, because the judge noted Kanning was unable to pay it. He was assessed a special fee of $20, which had to be paid before he could be released.

A group of Kanning's supporters protested outside the federal District Court and later packed one side of the courtroom for his sentencing.

Last year, Kanning tried to board a flight at Manchester Boston Regional Airport carrying only a Bible and a copy of the Declaration of Independence. He carried no identification when he attempted to board the flight.

He was charged with refusing to submit to screening and attempting to circumvent screening.

Kanning is a member of the Free State Project, which involves a number of libertarians from all over the U.S. moving to New Hampshire in hopes of electing a libertarian government. Kanning moved to Keene from Wyoming in March 2004.

Cool..the guy made it clear that this was a war protest.  Good job, Garry.

I don't think Russell is too interested in electing a libertarian government...

libertarian government? hahaha

LOL

So how many times will the FSP rebuke this reporter for imperfectly citing the project's goals?

They love destroying our relationships with the media.

Did anyone get a hard copy of the UL today? Where is this article placed?

A libertarian government would be great! It'd keep getting smaller and smaller until it imploded

<<So how many times will the FSP rebuke this reporter for imperfectly citing the project's goals?>>

at least it will inspire them to do something.  It seems like almost the only time they write LTEs or get in the papers is when they are responding to something we did.

LOL  Yeah that is kind of an oxymoron, isn't it?

Hey Russell it's great to have you back with us... I think free is a bit strong of a word, none of us are really free.  Great job!!!  Congratulations on sticking it out!

You are correct.

But I'd rather them do nothing than destroy our media relationships, which are worth their weight in gold in our activist efforts.
