I escaped from Nashville in 1993. I've hardly looked back.

Just last week, I escaped from Murfreesboro, TN with my liberty, but without about $3K of property seized, plus court costs, plus fine.  Yikes.  Scary state.

Over what may I ask?

State of Tennessee, financed by the lottery. It's a public community college.

I see it as reclaiming the money they took from us, to pay to bring them down. It's a vicious cycle, yes. But, these are extraordinary circumstances.

Its called 'Liberating Public Funds'

Dear Tyler,

It was classic rent seeking behavior by highwaymen glorified with badges and official-sounding titles.  The deputy sheriffs got a dog to give them a warrant to search my car.  (Apparently justices on the high courts don't mind having dogs give search warrants.)

But, the dog gave a false positive, as they so often do.  A search of my vehicle revealed no drugs of any sort, and nothing else illegal.  But, it did turn up some ammo for a pistol, so they made a second search, this time for a handgun, which they found.  No signs on the highway had alerted me to the requirement to unload the pistol.  Heh.

Also, for no particular reason, the sheriff's deputies seized two kevlar vests, chest insert, and kevlar helmet.  These are not illegal to own in Tennessee.  The rest of the $3K was in rifle and scope.  Altogether, a very expensive trip.

I was all set to fight on RKBA grounds, but the only attorney my network could find qualified to practice in Tennessee was Glenn Reynolds.  Glenn was on the National Space Society board of directors with me in 1990 and...did some very, very bad, statist, protectionist things to increase the cost of reaching space for everyone.  I hold him in considerable ill repute.  The lawyer I was able to find, recommended by my bail bondsman, was competent, but not eager for battle.  He raised economic utility arguments.  Not much point in fighting without a champion ready for battle.

By the way, on general "free advice" you may at some point need to know:  the bail bondsman whose listing in the jail phone booth (most jails have these listings, often required by law) matches the name of the bonding agency to the name of the person is likely owned by an individual.  Otherwise, go with the least commercial sounding bonding agency.  The big faceless bureaucracies tend to be, well, faceless and bureau-rat laden.  And, on this topic, your bail bondsman or bondswoman is very likely going to know a lot of attorneys in their state, and should have good recommendations to offer.

Yes, I've been arrested quite a few times, and convicted twice.  It also occurs to me to mention that if you are intending to do something civilly disobedient, wear comfortable shoes.  If you get arrested wearing uncomfortable shoes, you'll be miserable in jail.  Sneakers work great.  I've had my shoelaces confiscated, and every pair of boots I've ever had on, on grounds that they "might" have steel toes, but never sneakers.  Also, warm clothes, even in Summer.  Jailers like to keep inmates at about 60 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce their feistiness.  Further to this point, your shoes should be reasonably clean.  They may be the only pillow you'll have available.

Most of the people you are likely to meet in jail are nice, personable, and unhappy with the system.  When I'm in jail, I try to help out, writing letters to judges for other inmates, etc.  A pleasant demeanor and a helpful attitude with jailers and inmates will keep you from being tasered, beaten, have your stuff taken, or otherwise traumatized.

Hmmm.  There might be a useful thread for "advice on getting arrested."  I'll go start one, now.

Regards,

Jim

hey Tyler .... bring us some good signs at spring break. Anything against taxes/irs. :)

TylerM

Here's a few examples of signs I quickly came up with. These can be easily printed and transfered to poster board (after the school fixes the printers). Just things I thought of after reviewing images of your protest at Keene. We're trying to set up a similar protest at the IRS office here in Knoxville.

Feedback?

I like the 1st and 3rd ones the best.

Some people think .... rightly .... that the income tax is both constitutional and legal ... but doesn't apply to people like Ed and Elaine Brown.

The first one is fantastic.

TylerM

Sort of, but not in the way they enforce it. Plus, we have three or four supreme court hearings that state that the sixteenth amendment gave congress no new power of taxation.

However, that's another argument and another debate.

I REALLY like the first one as well.. I just sort of came up with that off the top of my head, after explaining to my younger brother what taxation is.

It's not about the law, it's about pay or else.

Keene protest today cancelled due to weather/illness.  :-\

Scouted the Knoxville, TN IRS building for demonstrations last night and got in touch with the public servants to ensure that we are allowed to demonstrate...

I'll modify all the signs that I bring with me with NHFree.com.

Russell Kanning

I sure hope they allow you.
