Secession -- a Revolutionary Idea

Some in Vermont want the state to again be an independent republic. Yet many see the effort, however earnest, as only an intellectual exercise.

WINDSOR, Vt. ? This is prime country-fair season, when villages roll out moon-sized pumpkins, maple-flavored everything and, here at Heritage Days, a manifesto on why Vermont should secede from the United States.

At a card table outside the tavern where Vermont first declared its independence in 1777, delegates from the Second Vermont Republic ? a.k.a. the secessionists ? looked just as comfortable one recent Sunday as the vendors selling goat's milk soap. The "Free Vermont" flag fluttered as fairgoers stopped to discuss whether their state should pull out of the union.

"It's this cool revolutionary thing," said Nicole Fusca, 21, who grew up in this southern Vermont hamlet. "But there is no basis to it. It's something I can't take seriously. I'll joke about it, but it will never happen."

But Thomas Naylor ? businessman, economics professor, author and Mississippi native ? believes otherwise. "It's not a question of 'if,' " he said. "The question is: When?"

Though the movement for Vermont secession that Naylor helped launch nearly three years ago is little more than an intellectual exercise, it is entirely earnest.

Its members argue that the U.S. government has lost its concern for individual citizens and small communities. They worry about global warming, the U.S. military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan, unfair trade practices, and the "tyranny of multinational corporations."

At a presentation for Vermont legislators some months ago, Naylor said: "Do you go down with the Titanic, or do you consider other options while there are still other options on the table?"

I'm not sure I'd want to live in an independant Vermont if they're seceeding so they have more environmental laws and start implement "fair" trade ::)

all of which can be handled prior to production (adding labor) by removing privilege rather than afterwards via regulation.

Somehow 'Frank' haunts this board with the disturbing notion that anyone here in NH would want to be part of such a socialist scheme as Vt Commons with his napoleonic self at the helm.

why do you think Jason Sorens, the founder of the Free State Project, would have joined the advisory board of the SVR if what you say were infact true?

or are you now going to start back tracking again?

I'd live in a free vermont so long as they didnt implement gun control

I am always interested in secession talk. In California they started talking about it after King George was "elected". One of the other papers in LA (Daily News) used to make a big deal about parts of the valley seceding from the city of LA. That almost happened and caused the city to cave on some issues.

Come to think of it, I probably would rather live in Vermont than Sweden. At least I could go to day trips to NH. Unless The Republic of Vermont inplmented a "you can't leave the country" deal like socialist countries tend to do.

It's nothing more than a socialist communal experiment from what I can see. And if you don't do things Frank's way, you will be in trouble!
After all, it's tied into the UN and that smells right there.
Most people don't know what they are getting into but when you peel away the onion layers, well, as I always say, just because it's got the word secession in the name doesn't necessarily mean it's any good.

if any of that were true why would the founder of the Free State Project, Dr. Jason Sorens, sign on to the advisory board of the Second Vermont Republic or Thomas DiLorenzo, from the Von Mises Institute for that matter?

argument from authority

Quoteargument from authority

huh?

I am not making an argument for the ideas...I am simply suggesting that two very prominent libertarians would de facto not be involved in an organization that promotes the state ownership of the means of production (socialism).
