I was watching a clip of the Colbert report online and Steven Colbert said that he was a libertarian (the clip was about the Willie Nelson citation for marijuana in L.A.). Do you think that Steven is a libertarian? I looked on the advocates for self government website www.self-gov.organd did not see Steven listed on there.

the show is a spoof (like Jon Stewart's "fake news") on O'Reilly with Colbert pretending to be a right wing "journalist"/commentator...

QuoteI saw the episode and wondered if he was serious, he sort of slipped it in. Obviously lots of stuff he says is tongue-in-cheek, but maybe

the whole friggin' show is a spoof - what are you talking about?

FrankChodorov

QuoteHe has real guests and they show real clips of news

Colbert (not Stewart) is playing (acting) as a right-wing "news" commentator when he asks these real guests questions or comments on the news...

that doesn't mean he IS a right-winger on economic issues...his use of irony actually means he is probably a left-winger on economic issues.

It was out of character, imo, when he said he was libertarian..I doubted he was, but it was weird, to me, when he said it..

I saw it, and it seemed to me a little bit like he had dropped out of character - but I'm not sure.

People have said he never drops character on that show, even during breaks.  Perhaps, perhaps not.  He called Stossel a Freedomtarian when he was on.  For now freedomtarian.com/org/net point to the FSP.

I haven't seen the clip, but perhaps he was parodying the neocons who call themselves libertarians.

By the way, where can I see the clip? I can't find one anywhere.

I'd say not.
I'd call him a moderate, slightly left-winger.

'libertarian'  is probably one of the most misused words in the media.

The "character" of Stephen Colbert is most definately not a libertarian. And it is a character, in the veign of Ali G and Borat. Stephen Colbert, as he acts on the show, is not a "real" person.

People are talking about whether or not Stephen Colbert is a libertarian as if he's a real person. I mean yeah, there is a guy called Stephen Colbert, but on the show he pretends to be a douchebag republican. If he says he's a libertarian on the show, all that means is that the fictional character Stephen Colbert considers himself a libertarian. He's playing the part of a douchebag who doesn't know what libertarian means.

are you sure?

Michael Fisher

Steven Colbert is a Georgist.
Didn't you know that?
