I currently live in an area (All Indiana actually) that has no vehicle inspections and not in one of the 3 or 4 counties that have emission tests.  After getting excited about seeing the new gas prices today here ($1.99 regular and one place with 89 at the same), I was wondering how much inspections and average registration cost would be in NH as well as gas prices.  Currently I have a 92 Camry that cost $43 this summer to register and I am wondering if it will be worth it to get it to pass inspections or sell it and look for something that will pass without work or much anyway.

A newer car will cost a lot more than that to register. The state portion of registration is based on weight of the vehicle I believe, and may be similar to your current amount. The town you move to has a registration that is based on the age and value of the car. A 1992 vehicle is at the lowest rate, so this is about the cheapest you can get. It is the one, two and three year old cars that people gasp over the registration.

Inspection is a separate issue.

I guess I haven't bought gas in awhile. ;D

Indiana has some of the cheapest gas in the country. The only places I've seen it cheaper are in Wyoming, and in Blaine, Washington (right on the Canadian border). The line of Canadians crossing into the U.S. for the sole purpose of getting gas sometimes stretches for MILES.

I suspect in the first two cases, it has something to do with taxes. In the latter case, I have no idea. Five miles into Washington state from there, gas is 40 cents higher, maybe more.

Part of it is location.  Up in Indy or Northern Indiana it is usually about .20 higher than here.

You're near Washington?  My home state.  I miss it so much.  Hey, why aren't you in NH, yet?

No, not now. I've just traveled extensively across the U.S. :) At the moment I'm not in NH because I still have a few months left in my lease. Once it's up, I'm there.

About how much do the car inspections cost and what are they looking for?

ABout $40 I think.
They have a list of things to check but it really depends on where you go.  Some are anal. Some are not.

I was doing a job on Nantucket, a while back.  Don't even ask what ferried-in gas costs.  We made very certain to fuel the vehicles before leaving the mainland.
