It's worth noting here that "towns" in NH are like miniature counties. They are defined by lines on a map that have nothing to do with geography, commerce, or accessibility.

We sometimes refer to the "built up" portions of towns, because these are what people might think of as "the town proper". But there are many homes that lie within the town boundaries, but which are out in the boonies, and in other states would be part of the unincorporated county territory.

New England generally lacks the concept of unincorporated county territory. While NH has unincorporated places, this is usually because they are completely uninhabited.

I would imagine that many such places are uninhabited because they're uninhabitable.
