First and foremost, thanks for offering to help.

What we need ASAP to get this thing going, is to find anybody who lives in in Rockingham District 8 (Hampstead, Kingston, Plaistow)
That person does not have to smoke pot ... they just have to want to end the foolish waste of tax money and police time that is currently spent on persecuting nonviolent users of marijuana.

That person then needs to call their State Representative: David Welch 642-4402.
The person needs to call Rep. Welch, and tell him that:
a) he's is one of Mr. Welch's constituents
b) he (or she) feels that "personal-use" amounts of marijuana should be made legal

THAT'S ALL!
It'll take less than 10 minutes of their time, and is DESPARATELY NEEDED.

It would be bonus (and a nice gesture) to also inquire about how to help Mr. Welch get re-elected. Offering to put up a Welch sign in the yard would certainly mean a lot to Mr. Welch, who after all needs to get re-elected if he is going to fight this battle in the State House.

Please report back here if you make any progress....
Thanks again!

NHNORML is not currently active.  Phil Greazzo was its last president, and he'd love to find somebody to take it over.

But we might be able to achieve some great reforms without a single group spearheading them.  The Granite State ID Coalition's success makes me believe a NH-based coalition approach could be more effective than using NORML or MPP.

I think I've found a candidate:

Dr. Gregory Thompson of Plaistow, NH

Address: 31 MAIN ST, PLAISTOW, NH  03865
Phone: 603-770-7737

He is a psychiatrist who was the subject of the following article (his license -- number 6720 -- has been fully reinstated):

Quote
New Hampshire doctor chided for alleged misconduct

PLAISTOW, New Hampshire - The New Hampshire Board of Medicine has reprimanded a Plaistow, New Hampshire psychiatrist who allegedly pressured one patient into obtaining Marijuana for him and acted unprofessionally in front of another patient, which led her to believe he was intoxicated.

These were not the first disciplinary actions against Dr. Gregory R. Thompson, who also practices in Salem, and had his license revoked in 1997 based on allegations of sexual misconduct. His psychiatry license was later reinstated.

The first of the two recent complaints was filed in February 2002 by Dr. Randall Fenton, a medical doctor who received information from one of his patients that Thompson pressured her into buying Marijuana on his behalf.

The second complaint was filed in September 2002 by one of Thompson's patients who observed unprofessional and uncharacteristic conduct, which caused her to believe he was under the influence of an intoxicant. As a result of her observations, she terminated her treatment with him.

Both complaints were denied by Thompson.

During the New Hampshire investigation, the board found Thompson's medical records for each of the patients in question were inadequate.

"Many of the notes were hand-written, disjointed and largely illegible accounts, which were difficult to understand and provided no pertinent history," the settlement agreement stated.

The board reviewed past patient records and found inadequate record patient documentation until May 2002.

Thompson admitted his practice of record-keeping could produce information gaps.

As a result of the reprimand, Thompson will participate in the state Physician's Health Program for five years, where he will be submitted to random testing. He was also fined $1,000 and is required to furnish copies of the settlement agreement to his current patients and any future employers within the next year.

In July 1997, Thompson's license was revoked after he admitted to having sexual contact on more than one occasion with a patient. He also admitted to revealing inappropriate details of his personal life to the patient and acknowledged a dependency on alcohol.

In August 2000, his license was reinstated with conditions allowing Thompson to treat only men in a supervised environment, continue psychotherapy and continue in a substance abuse program. In July 2001, the restrictions were removed.

I just found him through a Google search for marijuana and the three town names in Rockingham District 8.  Since it is past midnight in NH, you are right that I don't think that anyone's contacted him.  Obviously, this is a needle in a haystack (a pretty large needle, though), but at least he has some probability of being pro-legalization (and he doesn't have to tell Rep. Welch about his history).

Even if Dr. Thompson isn't the person to put this forward, I'll bet he knows somebody who is.  Good luck, whoever calls this guy.  He probably doesn't want to draw any more attention to himself.

Here's some people that I found by browsing MySpace.com by zip code who seem like good candidates (based on stereotypes, like college students, young people, music fans, etc.) -- I don't really do the whole MySpace.com so maybe one of our more MySpace savvy people could feel these folks out:

This guy is a 20 year old college student at UNH who lives in Hampstead:
http://www.myspace.com/jakequarrell

This guy is an 18 year old stunt rider who lives in Hampstead:
http://www.myspace.com/rborriello

This guy is a 27 year old Southern NH University student who liked the movies Van Wilder and Jackass and lives in Hampstead:
http://www.myspace.com/keithg19

This gal is a 25 year old who wrote "drugs and / or alcohol: both" and lives in Hampstead:
http://www.myspace.com/megbaldii

That's it for me now -- act now MySpace types.

I'll take the action item to call Dr. Thompson and these folks from MySpace.
Spencer -- you ROCK!!!

Let us know how it goes, Denis.  You rock for doing all of the work on this one.  All I did was do a little bit of surfing.

NH Native

I couldn't find anybody in the area through my usual channels, but it looks like you got a couple of leads.  It sounds to me like the area is pot city though, so you shouldn't have a problem finding somebody.  I was thinking of walking around the area with flyers and a cell phone, but then remembered that I suck at that :(.  I may try anyway if you have no success.

Good work!  On that last one, though, she says NO not both.

I emailed & added-as-friend each of the MySpace people (except the last one).
Only one of them, Jake, got back to me. He has good taste in music (The Cult are very cool and underappreciated) but stopped answering my emails when I brought up legalization. Possibly I came on too fast; possibly it's the fearful times we live in :-|
I'd much appreciate it if anybody else (Keith?) would also contact these folks; you may succeed where I failed.

I haven't contacted the Good Doctor yet; that'll have to wait for tomorrow (busy, busy...)

Soft White Underbelly?

I saw the Cult in 1987 or 1988 in MA.
