Truck Tops?

Is that the name for the covering over the bed of a truck?  I've never had one, but it seems it would be valuable here in NH.  Any recommendations?

Brock

  It's called a topper.

In my native MN we called them "toppers"; I've heard them referred to as "caps" here also.

"Topper" or "bed cover" or "camper shell" are common names, if you're talking about the ones that are roof-high and have windows. If you're talking about the ones that are level with the bed rails, then they're called "tonneaus" or "tonneau covers".

Don't forget your gun rack.

Some people let the back of their trucks fill up with snow so they don't slide around as much.

I thought that's what sandbags were for?

There are lots of names. I think they are a good idea. Lots of times you can buy them used.

Thanks Kevin.  I had seen the tonneaus but did not know what they were called.  Those look more useful than the topper as one only needs to roll it up if one needs to put something in the bed.  I don't have a lot of cargo so I don't think I need the extra vertical room the truck toppers offer.

Ah, but you can camp in the bed of your truck, and the cap (most common name for them up here) is a darn sight more waterproof and generally weather-resistant than a tent.

Plus, much easier to lock - a canvas tonneau cover can be pretty easily cut, without even making a lot of noise.  A solid cover is much more secure, but they can be a pain to remove/re-install when you want to use the bed.

Personally, I'd get a cap, and just have a trailer around if I needed to haul anything that wouldn't fit under the cap.  The very few times that I've needed to haul something taller than the cap of a truck, and had to use a trailer, are easily offset by the majority of the time that the bed is used for much smaller items, which I knew would be protected from the elements by the cap over them.

But the snow melts when it warms up and you dont need the weight then, self-removing.

If it melts, you can have people lie in the water in the back. Fun for a hot summer day ;D

The make solid tonneau covers as well as the canvas ones.

The caps that come up to the top of the cap can be removed with two people in a few minutes, so it isn't that bad if you need to fit something that won't make it under the cap.

Another side-benefit is that either a tonneau or a cap will reduce your drag.  Dunno which is better, though.  A cap looks like it'd create more turbulence behind your vehicle, but a tonneau would have two turbulence zones.

Dunno.  Maybe this wasn't even a question in your mind.  ;)
