Car accident, what to do?

My girlfriend got into an accident yesterday.  She's alright, but even though it was in a parking lot, the front of my '98 Toyota Tacoma took a lot of damage.  After taking it around to the local auto body shops, it's pretty clear that repairing it is not worthwhile.

The KBB value of the truck in good condition is $4500.

The estimates I got today for the repairs were $2500-$3000 at least.  Probably would be more if they could open the hood to better assess the damage.

So at this point I think I just want to get out of it.  It's a 2WD southern vehicle with only 95,000 miles on it.  Well taken care of, non smoker.

What would you do if you were in my position?  Sell it to a junkyard?  Sell to one of the auto body places?  One of them offered me $650.

Oh man, so sorry, it totally sucks to be in an accident.

I hope you are able to get something for it.

Rocketman

I'll bet Rosie the Riveter could fix it...  ;D

You might be able to sell parts yourself and make more of a profit than you would having it repaired and then selling it.

Offer to sell at $800 and negotiate down.

Is insurance going to pay anything? Not that that affects the price you sell it at, just being nosey  :o

Russell Kanning

Would the truck be worth $3000 to you if you fixed it?

KBCraig

If you don't have to sell it right away, you can part it out over eBay. Lots of car parts get sold that way.

Does someone do this work?  I am useless when it comes to handy things, and even if I wasn't, I sure don't have time to deconstruct and sell parts.

It wouldn't be worth paying someone else to do. That's why you get so little from salvage yards: there's a lot of labor involved in taking apart cars.

...and Kate could let our kids make a mess in it, and then lock the keys inside.

I hope the other person didn't get hurt.
