I think you might want to change your name to Nationalist instead of objectivist.

I do like Carlos Mencia but I do not agree with the ideology that he speaks about in his routine. I don't know about you but I do not think that jokes about people being vaporized or the destruction of 2 countries is a funny subject. I am ashamed that my money has funded the destruction of buildings, the deaths of people, and the torture of people that are labeled "Enemy combatants"

Quantrill

One thing I've struggled with is understanding why some people view Patriotism as a bad thing.  Or Nationalism, if that's what you call a love of your country.  Yes, America is not as free as it was when we declared independence (hell, it's probably worse than it was under King George) but I love my country and would not want to live anywhere else.

Maybe it's because I'm from the midwest and we are known for being very proud people.  Even stubborn at times.  As far as laughing about the destruction of other countries, I'm of the mindset that I wish we were isolationists but we're not.  If we have to "vaporize" people then so be it.  Do what you have to in order to keep terrorists from coming here.  Better them than us...    :sad4:

I think it's the definition, Quantrill.

Strictly speaking, a "nation" is not a government.  But practically speaking, that is how the term is used, and in all honestly, people that are nationalistic *do* love their government.

Government is different from your *country*.  I love my *country* -- defined as the people, land, culture.  But I'm downright terrified of the government (thugs) that control people in this country.  It makes no sense to love government.

Its not just a matter of loosing our freedoms.  Its about our history of sticking our noses in the business of other countries and going out of our way to 'vaporize' people.  Hard to be proud of that :-X

Nationalism is profoundly anti-Libertarian, as it is an utter negation of State's rights.  It is not simply synonymous with "love of one's country".

You say you wouldn't want to live anywhere else.  Have you ever actually been anywhere else?  There's nothing wrong with broadening your horizons through travel, and if that means spending a few years overseas, you do have the option of remaining an American citizen with your loyalties and ideals intact.  Your apparent provincialism is really not something that does you credit.  Native Bostonian Benjamin Franklin went to live in England from 1757 to 1775, and in France from late 1776 until 1785.  I seriously doubt that you are more of an American patriot than Mr. Franklin was.

Should we bomb the U.S. in order to vaporize terrorists like Timothy McVeigh?  What country should we bomb in order to vaporize terrorists like the 9/11 attackers... Terroristan?  Maybe we should go ahead and kill EVERYONE, just in case.  Or hey, here's an idea: maybe we should stop inciting terrorism with our aggressive foreign policies, and then we won't have to bomb anyone.

Maybe I'm not more of a Patriot than Mr. Franklin.  I never claimed to be.  I certainly don't fault BF for experiencing other cultures, but as I've already stated, I'm an isolationist.  Call me a hermit if you will.  I'd prefer to live by the mantra "don't talk to me, we'll get along just fine."  I also realize that isolationism isn't exactly practical considering the damage we've done to other countries (justified and otherwise).

QuoteShould we bomb the U.S. in order to vaporize terrorists like Timothy McVeigh?
No.  That would be illegal.

QuoteWhat country should we bomb in order to vaporize terrorists like the 9/11 attackers... Terroristan?
Not necessarily any specific country.  But find the a-holes responsible and drop all the bombs you want.

QuoteMaybe we should go ahead and kill EVERYONE, just in case.  Or hey, here's an idea: maybe we should stop inciting terrorism with our aggressive foreign policies, and then we won't have to bomb anyone.
Or maybe we shouldn't be so sarcastic!    ;)

VERY TRUE!   I wish like hell we weren't the policemen of the world.   :glasses7: I hate the fact that we've had troops stationed in other countries for decades.  The corrollary to that is that I also believe we should send $0 in aid to other countries.  Unfortunately for me, it's not my call.  The damage has already been done.  I don't think terrorists would drop their plans to attack us again if we pull out of IRAQ.  Even if we pull troops out of every country.  Very sad but very true.

I'm with you.  I've seen the stickers that read "I love my country but fear my government."  The FEDGOV is indeed scary - I watched a show just  yesterday on the Waco tragedy, and they never went into WHY the ATF were after the Branch Davidians.  Just went through the details of the raid and interviews with survivors and such.

So if I love my country but not necessarily my government, what is the term for that?  Patriot?  Porcupine?

One more thing while I'm on my  :soapbox:  :  I guess I don't understand the purpose of the Karma feature.  Why would you "smite" someone who disagrees with your personal views?  I think I've smited (smitten?  no can't be.  smote?  smoten?) one person.  Unless someone is simply acting like a jerk, why would they need to be smited?  Oh well, I'm thick-skinned enough that I won't "rescind" my membership simply because people are pissed that my views don't match theirs.  All I want is a smaller, less intrusive government!

Loving the people, culture, and customs of one's upbringing should be separate from statolatry, but it is not.

Loving one's country, that horrid jingoistic statolatry that to some extent pervades every American heart, is despicable, effusive, wretched, pitiful, irreligious (commandments 1, 3, and esp. 2), irrational, spurious, perilous, and crass.

(I'm not a negative person. Really...)

slim

Quantrill If you love the country and think that is patriotism or nationalism I would not classify those ideas as a "bad thing". I just don't see the logic in thinking that one side of a line in the sand is better then the other. And I will state that if a army landed on the shores and invaded some of the property using force I would be the first to defend that property.

Now I do want to disagree with your statement "If we have to "vaporize" people then so be it.  Do what you have to in order to keep terrorists from coming here.  Better them than us... "

What you advocate in that statement sounds like you believe that killing innocent people to kill one person makes it right. Now I think that killing a innocent person is murder and that person should be taken to court and given a trial. If you are terrified that terrorist may come here to kill you think why they would want to do that? Humm maybe because our government has been meddling in their countries affairs by propping dictators up, funding insurgents like Osama Bin Laden, and forcing our will on the countries.

Lets treat the disease and not the symptoms!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm will the oil rigs still work?
Should we bomb a country that we give so much money to? (SA)
Did everyone in those 2 countries harm us?
Can you prove that they had something to do with it?

And the big one..... isn't that the same mentality that caused the terrorists to attack the US?  I mean they see the US govt as evil.. therefore they attacked the US citizens.  In their mind they were right.  oh wait... objectivism is only about how YOU perceive things.

Setting aside the innocence of the Iranian and Saudi citizens for a moment, do you realize how many people outside those two nations will suffer when the oil stops flowing?

Mr O doesn't care.  It is all about him.  (or what he perceives) -- see I am learning about Objectivism. ;)

Don't judge Objectivism by him. He doesn't have a clue.
