Police Use Stun Gun on Student for Not Showing ID at UCLA Library

Thursday , November 16, 2006

LOS ANGELES ? A UCLA police officer shocked a student with a stun gun at a campus library after he refused repeated requests to show student identification and wouldn't leave, police said.

The student, Mostafa Tabatabainejad, was shocked Tuesday at about 11 p.m. as police did a routine check of student IDs at the University of California, Los Angeles Powell Library computer lab.

"This is a long-standing library policy to ensure the safety of students during the late-night hours," said UCLA Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein.

She said police tried to escort Tabatabainejad, 23, out of the library after he refused to provide identification. Tabatabainejad instead encouraged others at the library to join his resistance, and when a crowd began to gather, police used the stun gun on him, Greenstein said.

Tabatabainejad was arrested for resisting and obstructing a police officer and later released on his own recognizance. He declined to comment Wednesday night.

The incident was recorded on another student's camera phone and showed Tabatabainejad screaming while on the floor of the computer lab. It was the third incident in a month in which police behavior in the city was criticized after amateur video surfaced. The other two involved the Los Angeles Police Department.

Acting Chancellor Norman Abrams promised an investigation.

"The safety of our campus community is of paramount importance to me," Abrams said in a statement.

It is for your own safety that we must taser you   >:(

I dont carry my student ID with me unless I'm going for food, which I need it to "pay" for. If I got asked for it I'd still lie and say I didnt have it. Plus it's good exercise to have to run back to my dorm to grab it :P

Why would anyone continue to refuse to cooperate after they saw the Taser come out?

Should they have to?

You think this might have something to do with it?

At that point in the situation, he had to, or get Tasered.  He knew when he entered the library he might have to show ID.

Yeah!  Mostafa Tabatabainejad, with a Fucking backpack, refusing to show ID.

After your blood cools back below boiling, tell me who pissed you off more, the campus cops or the other kids who stood around in all their outrage and did nothing to help the kid who was getting tasered.

Quantrill

Man, those students should have bum-rushed the cops and put those tasers to good use.    Freaking pathetic!!!

Crazy that everyone has a camera.

Campus cops are always the worst.
They are upset that they can't be 'real cops'

A lot of peoples cell phones can make videos too. And campus cops ARE "real" cops, as real as any others, they can enforce all the laws of their state and local jurisdiction. That was the primary argument that Tim Logsdon used to place UNH under the "political subdivision" definition in state law, and demand the right to carry a gun there. I'm at PSU and have my CCL, and I do CCW on campus, with little fanfare or adrenaline. It doesnt phase me to think that there's a gun in my pocket, it's for protecting myself and others. Though the one I have now is quite bulky, I'm still in the market for a kel-tec p3at.

I regret watching that video. I cant stand seeing anybody in that much pain.

I counted 4 times.

Quantrill

Looks like they're about to talk about it on MSNBC.  Keith Olbermann or however you spell his name just mentioned it...

slim

I agree the students should have made the campus pigs leave they out numbered them by quite a large margin. I hope someone can send the guy that got tasered some information about the FSP, I think he is ripe to be a first 1000 signer.

KBCraig

Almost at the end of the video, one of the cops tells a bystander: "You keep asking about badge numbers, you're gonna get tasered too!"

>:(

Quantrill

The news report said the kid was released on his own recognizance (spelling?).  So they taser him at least 4 times for not showing an ID and not standing up after being tasered, haul him to jail, then let him go?  Makes sense to me...    ::)
