Those damn journalists will print anything without bothering to check whether it's true.

Is anyone going to answer the question of whether or not they think this "students only after 11:00pm" policy is reasonable and prudent for the security of late-night library users?  Or are you guys just going to fritter off into irrelevancies?

It doesn't matter whether they're "reasonable and prudent" or not. That's a red herring. It's a government bureaucracy; they can set whatever rules they want for their government building. If they set a rule which says any student who doesn't show his ID gets Tasered six times, then that's what goes.

Besides, when have you ever known a government bureaucracy to do anything "reasonable and prudent"?

The policy is unreasonable and unnecessary. If someone comes into the library and hurts someone, then that person should be dealt with after the fact.

I do not believe that "if this rule even saves one person from harm, then it's worth it" -- though such unthinking pragmatic nonsense is rampant these days among the majority of pro-government zombies. Look at the result of this policy: government thugs harm innocent civilians.

If dangerous people come into a library, then responsible, armed individuals can choose to deal with the danger as they see fit.

Government has absolutely no place in society in my eyes. It should be eliminated immediately and completely from at least a small geographic area, so that some of us who choose to be free can do so at least somewhere on this planet, unmolested by any monopolies of force.

Damn right Mike.  No Government = No Goddam UCLA Library!

Oh, so now a guy who's screaming at the top of his lungs when asked to show his student ID as part of a nightly (every night at 11:00pm) routine to help assure some measure of security to night-owl library users is heir to Rosa Parks?

Do you have any comment on the five year old little girl who was molested in the bathroom of a public library that I posted above?

Or on these:

A homeless man who tried to rape an 8-year-old girl and left her for dead in the bathroom of a Center City library...

Student raped in [library] bathroom, college reacts (Ohlone College in Fremont, California)

Tell me, will you, is a simple security policy and procedure of restricting university library access to students paying tens of thousands of dollars a year in tuition to the university from 11:00pm to 7:00am a reasonable one, or is it not?  Are you seriously comparing this policy to racial segregation in the deep south?

And somehow I don't think Rosa Parks screamed "F--- OFF," or "DON'T TOUCH ME," at the top of her lungs when she was asked to leave her seat on the bus, but that could be just me.

Maybe UCLA should just close the library and drag everyone out, kicking and screaming, at 11:00pm.  Save them some headaches, that's for sure.

Close the entire university system.

No need to close it.

First, get the federal government out of it.

Second, get the state government out of it.

Lloyd Danforth

No.  Close it!  One less university is a good thing!  There is a system of 'Degree Tyranny' in this country that allows colleges and universites to, arbitrarily, raise their tuition and all other costs, annually.  People with degrees are making sure that, only, people with degrees get certain jobs, regardless of the abilities and experience of the non-degree applicant.  Parents and students, on their own,  are forced to pay whatever the schools demand.
The quanity of colleges went up and the quality went down during the war in Vietnam due to the coveted 2S deferment that kept young men out of the Draft.  People were hired to teach that would have had a hard time getting job in any but the most liberal colleges before this time. A lot of far left content was taught that wouldn't have been earlier.   A lot of the members of my generation ( Bill &Hill)became marxist or otherwise confused due to this.  I would point at this as part of the reason for all of the problem we are experiencing today.

That doesn't sound like it's the university's fault. After all, it was just there. It sounds like the socialist wackos forced their way in by way of a government funding program.

Get rid of the government funding programs, and the universities will fix themselves. They'll have to, or they'll not have enough students to keep their doors open.
