We've always wanted an Irish Wolfhound, but they don't come cheap. We decided of the other giant breeds, we had a better chance of getting a Great Dane, so we've been keeping an eye out for one. We also discussed getting a bloodhound.

Be careful what you wish for: a friend called and wanted to know if we wanted a half Great Dane, half bloodhound.

Well, um, hell yeah!

Meet Tonka, a 3 year old girl who winds up looking like the world's tallest coonhound.

Regal and majestic:

Lotta legs:

A face to love:

Tonka is now chasing rabbits where there are no fences or roads to cross.

It's amazing that a giant breed(s) dog like her made it to 14 years old. She was in great shape until the last year, and only really went downhill over the winter.

Ahh, KB, sorry to hear about your dog.  That is a pretty good old age for a big girl like that.  Still doesn't make it any easier.

Thanks. It took a lot of digging today. All hands on board. It was sad, but we shared a lot of laughs about her various shenanigans over the years.

One time, for no apparent reason, she jumped up on a corner computer desk that barely had room for all four feet, and was just standing there looking quizzical, like "Whut?"

Another time she went walkabout and came home carrying a full quart bucket of catfish stink bait (brand new, unopened), which she then proceeded to open in the back yard and eat half the contents.

This was our third elderly rescue we've had to put down in 10 months. All of them spent some good years with us.

LOL -- and then there was the time she removed a drumstick from the Thanksgiving turkey with almost surgical precision. Seriously, it was like she had learned to use the carving set!
