Apparently NH is the 9th most expensive state to rent in the USA counted by how much you have to earn before less than one third of your income goes to your rent
No friggin kidding me; i'm paying the same amount for a room right now as I would have paid for a whole one-bedroom apartment in Wichita, KS! But I'm also reasonably certain I'm getting paid more here than I would have been paid back home.

Quoterobably true, unless you live with a bunch of other people in Ron's house!
Or Alec's :) he's got a room open and is looking for a renter!

In some towns a $250,000 house can hit $5000 a year in property taxes (Derry).

I guess you won't be moving to Hopkinton.
$250,000 would be about $5,500 in taxes.

Who is Alec?  I'm looking for a place to rent, prefferably around manchester or Keene.

I tried to fix the above, but, couldn't move his question outside of the quote.

wheather you "rent" or "own"  slave boxes might be a more realistic term.

So you avoid being a slave, how? Sleeping on a park bench?

stitcherman

no, but it is nice to be aware that you are one. :)

QuoteHm, I'm going to have to make more money if I want to pay these horrendous property taxes!

Put into perspective with the overall tax burden of states in the US, NH ranks in the bottom 2.

And for the record I'm NOT justifying taxes of any kind.

for anyone moving from Kansas .... you will pay more for rent

for anyone from CA .... you know you will not have to worry .... nh is much cheaper than most of CA

Urban renewal and local codes have driven out a lot of inexpensive housing.

I rented a room in Portland, ME in 1970 for a dollar a day.  It was in an old colonial house where each floor had a hallway running down the middle and two rows of rooms little wider than a twin bed.  You got a bed, table and lamp  and one clean sheet a week.(the top sheet from last week became the bottom sheet) and shared a bathroom at the end of the hall.

Would seriously doubt anyone  in CA is paying only 5k for real estate taxes on a 400k home.
In CA you pay about 1% on the original sale price. So it partly depends on how much it was bought for. Even a newly purchased $400,000 house would be $4,000 + maybe a couple hundred.

It can be 1% - 1.5%.
Plus income tax.
Plus high sales tax.

Dear God, a studio apartment in NH goes for more than a 1-bedroom 1-bath with kitchen and living area in Mobile, AL.  I sure hope I can find a decent job, else my NH-related plans will have to be put on hold for a while.   :o

How much per year do the state sales and income taxes come to in AL?
