Silent demo at NH Liquor Commission

Dada didded another silent demo, at the NH state liquor commission....after hearing on this forum, and in the Union Leader, that they were pushing for a ban on 18-20 year-olds in bars.

My sign said

The State Shouldn't
Ban Youn Adults
From Bars
NHfree.com

and the flyer said...

Dear NHSLC:  Please don't push for a ban on young adults in bars

I have the right to remain silent.  But thanks for your desire to know more about this demonstration.

I read the Union Leader article regarding possible efforts by the Liquor Commission to ban 18-20 year olds from nightclubs.

As best I could tell, your representatives did not come right out and advocate a specific type of legislation...and I appreciate that.   When any unelected government minister uses their taxpayer-funded position to argue in favor of additional government control...that constitutes compelled speech.

I resent it when representatives of a bureaucracy advocate, at my expense, new restrictions on businesses and individual freedom.   If I want more restrictions, I'll move to Mass. or New York.

I don't want you to aid and abet new discrimination against young adults.  I'm more afraid of institutions like yours than I am of 19 year olds entering bars.   Some of them abuse their rights, but that is a price we pay for freedom.  It's not right to punish an entire class of citizens because some of them misbehave or cause a problem.

Please know that at least one citizen would appreciate it if you would just do nothing all day rather than wasting my tax money on social engineering schemes that undermine everything New Hampshire is supposed to stand for.

Yours,

Dave Ridley

will report in later regarding the interesting reaction this generated....

Awesome.  I just became an adult a little over a month ago, and all I can say is that I find it condescending for the government officials to be telling me that I can't go into a bar because I won't be responsible enough.

Tyler you were an adult awhile ago... and you are more mature than many years older than you.

Alcohol and tobacco sellers are ridiculous about ID here in New Hampshire. I think state law mandates that sellers have to ID anyone they think looks under 30, and many stores and bars voluntarily have a policy to ID literally everyone, which is the most retarded thing ever, excuse my youngster language. They will literally ID 65 year olds buying a beer or a packet of cigarettes, what the hell is that? And I thought bars in Sweden were being strict when they ID people 2 years over the age limit...

I guess you're right.  My senior class just voted on superlatives and I got "First to go Bald" (cause I look and act like I'm 40).  But you would think that just becoming an adult in the eyes of "the law" would change things, but I see now more than ever how they treat adults like children.  Trying to ban people from ages 18-20 from being in bars is totally a step in the wrong direction.  We need to make the drinking age 18!

Agreed. There should be a single uniform Age of Consent.

I liked that part.  Most people (myself included) don't think of that angle.  Often times it is these bureaucrats that push for more restrictions.  Government employees aren't allowed to advocate for the success or defeat of political candidates while on official duty, I think the same should apply to this kind of speech.

Great protest, Dave. Please let us hear the rest of the story in your follow-up.

Some folks here think that all government employees should quit their jobs because "some of them misbehave or cause a problem". ;)

I didn't even know that this was one of your contemplated protests. Great job!

I'd have voted you "Most Likely To Look Like Rick Schroeder On 'NYPD Blue'."

;)

I salute your maturity, Tyler. Thanks for keeping in touch with the Underground. I look forward to the day when you serve in a major NH position.

I wish that all clerks, bouncers, bartenders, etc. who sell alcohol and cigarettes "card" everyone, and pay particular scrutiny to people who appear to be 65 or older.  Such a work slowdown would help to demonstrate the absurdity of these laws and regulations.  It is a perfect opportunity for civil obedience (if everyone was overly law-abiding the whole system would grind to a halt).

TEBON

it's like the old drinking age battle in the first place.

They're old enough to go fight in Iraq, to die in Iraq, to kill innocents over oil (or not), yet they still can't even BE in the same ROOM with people who happen to be 21 or over.

It's ok, don't worry, at least you're not "liberal" massachushitts has an idea of kids that just doesn't make sense.  Did you know kids in MA would rather not play football, or study, or play video games. . . the only thing they really want to do is get some Merlot and go drive around drinking it all night. . . hoping to kill someone.

Dreepa

Don't forget they don't want to play 'tag' either. ::)
