My Jazzy Girl is here for a visit, and she seems to be doing just fine.  Just wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions for making dogs comfortable in the cold/snow?  I don't know if it will actually snow before she leaves, but do I need to shovel a path for her outside when she has to go potty?

Also, I think I should install some stair mats, as she's having a tough time going down these wooden stairs.

Tee-hee.

Ian, your dog should be much more comfortable than you are in the snow.  If she's never seen snow before, her reactions should in fact be pretty cute.

Usually they start putting on a thicker coat when it gets cold, but sounds like she wont be here long enough for that.

You can always buy her some boots, just to keep the snow out of her pads.

Yes, they sell dog boots.

::)  Yes, they sell anything people might be dumb enough to buy.

Dogs are born with boots.  If she's going to be out in snow for a long time, it's good for you to massage her feet every so often to warm them up and restore circulation.  But somehow I don't forsee Ian and Jazzy Girl trying to scale any mountains in the dead of NH winter.   ;D

I will bring her to the IRS protest tomorrow.  Perhaps Griffin will be in attendance...

Every dog I've known has loved snow. My chihuahua would be downright miserable in the rain, he hated nothing more. But in the snow he'd run and roll around with glee ;D It was so cute when the snow was higher than he was ;D

My pup was a little cold coming to NH in March after being born in Texas.

Now he likes the cold and I really wish he could play in some snow.

I think your dog is going to like the NH weather he already has a fur coat. ;D

Jazzy Girl is not a he.   ;D

I never bought them boots, but, the Standard Poodles I walked with for years would get a clump or ball of snow built up under their paws and they would stop and chew on it.  I believe the perspire some thru their feet and this ices up the snow.  The clump probably spreads apart their feet.

Dogs are born with boots.

And left to their own devices, they'd have the sense to keep their "boots" out of situations that we put them in.

As Lloyd pointed out, dogs do get ice/snow wedged in their pads, and it can cause problems. If nothing else, boots make for easier cleanup after a walk.

Heidi, the white one, grew up in San Jose, California...

Nadia is Kevin Roll's dog, she stayed with us until Kevin was able to get into his house.

I have a photo of her first encounter with snow, on the way across Wyoming at a rest stop.  There was a little narrow patch of grass, into which she'd tucked all her paws while she sniffed the snow.  As you can tell, she adapted quite well.

I have some velcro leather boots for my dog Wilson. You will get to know Wilson when we get there!

I use them because the salt that people and the city use on the sidewalks hurts his feet. Some dogs don't seem as sensative to it.  Be on the lookout for her picking up her feet like she's on hot pavement and whining.
