But the UL conducted a poll and the results are in --

"However, better than 65 percent of the more than 200 people responding to the survey do not believe the lack of snow is a disaster and better than 70 percent do not believe the state should ask for federal relief money to help the ailing businesses."

Maybe the state of New Hampshire should consider asking for federal disaster relief money since we don't have enough coastline and that's really hurting our beach tourism and shipping industries.

This is probably a situation in which a "reverse insurance" company would be beneficial... given that the weather is inherently unpredictable and that their businesses depend on the weather being cold and snowy, such a plan would allow for companies to stay afloat during lean times.

Of course, better planning in the future may also be appropriate for some of these businesses (depending on how narrow their margin is, of course), or, from a personal standpoint, not putting all their eggs in one basket.

Perhaps they should consider developing fall-back plans... something to do if the weather isn't good to them.

Not everyone opposed helping businesses hard hit by the snowless winter. Jim Covey of Twin Mountain wrote that the lack of snow has already had a devastating effect on several businesses in his area.

"There are neighbors of mine who are desperate and need some sort of relief, either from the town, county or state as their expenses have remained the same or have gone up but they have virtually no income," he said.

Covey noted this is the second straight year the snowmobile industry has been hammered and if it continues adds snowmobilers will go to Canada to ride.

"Most of us love living in the North Country and view it as a great place to raise a family and in spite of the weather will stick it out, but boy, will it hurt," Covey wrote.

I'm just guessing there aren't a lot of Coveys in Twin Mountain who rely on tourism for a living.

The lack of snow has had a bad effect on every business in Twin Mountain as they all rely on tourism - gas stations, motels, gift shops, etc. With about 1/5 as many skiers as usual and no snowmobilers, business profits are about 1/8 of what they usually are.

With temperatures hovering right around freezing, many roads in central and southern New Hampshire were slick with freezing drizzle or sleet on Sunday, and the weather was only supposed to get worse overnight.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for late Sunday night and Monday, predicting snow, heavy sleet and freezing rain throughout most of the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday.

The Weather Service says the storm could coat roads with up to a half-inch of ice, making travel dangerous. The ice also could bring down trees and power lines.
