Trying to keep up

Very brief "Recent History of Us":

Mary's mom figure, Patsy (I call her my mother-in-law to avoid complicated explanations) stepped out of the shower last week and shattered her right femur. It was weakened by a large tumor. Sunday, the docs basically replaced that femur with a titanium rod, and added a rod to the left femur, which was also on the verge of snapping.

Tuesday, CT and MRI dye scans revealed multiple hot spots. She's started radiation treatment. It's a good hospital. Tough old broad that she is, her spirits are great, and she totally rejects predictions of "two weeks" or "two months" or "two years". All she cares about is getting back to her horses.

Meanwhile, because apparently she didn't already have nearly enough to worry about, Mary has gone and gotten herself a case of pleurisy. She woke up Wednesday morning hurting. She was off work Wednesday and Thursday; tried to go to work Friday morning, and they immediately sent her home.

So, we spent three lovely hours in the emergency room today, to get a shot of Tordal and prescription for Naprosen.  She gets a nice mini-vacation... unpaid, of course.

And my mother called this morning, to let us known that the multiple biopsies she'd endured were negative for lymphoma or any other cancer.

It's been quite a week. I ask forgiveness from anyone I have offended, and covet prayers from those who believe in God's power to heal.

You don't need the prescription naprosyn.  Naprosyn is just the brand name for naproxen, a formulation of which is available over the counter.  The brand name over the counter is Aleve, though numerous generics are available. To get the prescription dose, you just double the dose.  The traditional pill is 220 mg, so you just take two pills, 440 mg. to get the prescription dose.  Just as info, so next time you won't have to pay the doctor if all you need is your painkillers.

Thanks for the info. I vaguely knew that, but hadn't thought about it. With insurance, the generic was only $1.23 for 30 pills.

She's doing much better today. Actually able to take an almost full breath. Still hurting and on her heating pad, though.

Sorry about all of the bad stuff happening with your family. Your mother in law sure does sound like a tough lady and her attitude sounds awesome.  I knew an elderly woman that had Hodgkins and she was tough and swore that she would be fine and she was after time.
I'm glad your mom's biopsies turned out fine. My best friend of 33 years has juvenile diabetes and a tumor in her liver which the doctor thinks is cancerous so we're just waiting until she gets her biopsy done, it is so scary!
I had pleurisy once and it is so painful, I hope the medicine is helping your wife.
I will pray for all of you!

Sorry to hear what you are going through.  I've lost both my mother and my mother-in-law in the last 15 months.  Spend as much time with her as you can regardless of whether she's gonna last 2 weeks or 20 years.

Thanks for all the wishes. Here's an update: Patsy was released from the hospital Thursday, with a very good prognosis. Biopsies confirmed that the tumors are very treatable with a combination of radiation and hormone therapy.

We went down there Saturday to visit. We picked up 30 pounds of crawfish and had a little celebration.

We had about five pounds left over, so Mary shucked them and put the meat in the freezer, just to make some etoufee. 

When she makes the etoufee, we might do up some crawfish pies with it.

You can get a bottle of 200 naproxen sodium capsules at Walmart for about $10

I use it so that I do not have to get a prescription for hydrocodone for my back pain.
