CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) ? NASA said on Monday it plans to build a permanently occupied base on the Moon, most likely at the lunar south pole.

The habitat will serve as a science outpost as well as a testbed for technologies needed for future travel to Mars, and construction will follow a series of flights to the Moon scheduled to begin by 2020.

"We're going for a base on the Moon," Scott "Doc" Horowitz, NASA's associate administrator for exploration, told reporters in a teleconference from the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

I guess it's time to start wondering what laws there will be on the moon. I'll be pissed off if the US government just claims the entire moon is US federal territory and then that's that. I'd like to see some kind of private property thing happening, I don't want the US government saying the moon is theirs

WASHINGTON – NASA could put a man on the moon but didn't have the sense to keep the original video of the live TV transmission.

In an embarrassing acknowledgment, the space agency said Thursday that it must have erased the Apollo 11 moon footage years ago so that it could reuse the videotape.

But now Hollywood is coming to the rescue.

The studio wizards who restored "Casablanca" are digitally sharpening and cleaning up the ghostly, grainy footage of the moon landing, making it even better than what TV viewers saw on July 20, 1969. They are doing it by working from four copies that NASA scrounged from around the world.

"There's nothing being created; there's nothing being manufactured," said NASA senior engineer Dick Nafzger, who is in charge of the project. "You can now see the detail that's coming out."

Sorry, but you really have to be a numbskull grande to think that the Apollo lunar missions were faked.  I take it as a barometer of the technical stupidity of the American people.

And not only did the U.S. government NOT claim the moon, they explicitly renounced all such claims.

I was saddened to learn that one of the Apollo Hoax chief ignoramii Ralph Rene died in December of an apparent suicide.  His "wisdom" (new values for pi, Newton/Einstein/Gauss were all idiots, etc.) provided endless entertainment for us select few who know more than the ancient "four element" model of matter.

Regarding the amusing Aldrin video, I had read somewhere that the reason Aldrin was so pissed is because he was lured to this location under false pretenses.

You gotta admit, it IS astounding the number of people who believe Apollo was faked.  But then, I guess we have a contemporary version with "Global Warming".

I'm ashamed to admit that I've even met people with technical educations (Sibrel, Rene, and Kaysing had absolutely none) who believed in the Apollo Hoax.
