Are there any Free State Musicians?

Hey y'all.

I'm moving up to NH this summer, after I graduate. And I will happen to have acquired, by that time, my music/percussion performance degree. Although I shall not pursue music as a professional career, I still have an enormous love of music. I was wondering if there are any Free State Musicians out there that I might be able to hook up with at some point in the future.

I have no instruments of my own, although when I have an extra $10,000 lying about I do intend to buy one of these.

And when I have an extra $1,800, I'll buy a nice drumset for "the jazz."

In the meantime, I have considered the possibility of conducting any ad hoc ensembles I can gather together (read: "have time to gather together"). I think it'd be fantastic to have an entirely-Free-Stater membership orchestra/band/ensemble. Although the likelihood of that is slim. Are there any other percussionists out there? How about brass/string/wind players? Anyone interested in a choir? or a mixed-instrument ensemble with moi as conductor/director? Jazzers looking for a combo member (even though I'm bad at drumset and worse on vibes)?? My goal is simply making great music; not necessarily public performances.

I have an intense love of all things J. S. Bach and simply adore Beethoven's Piano and String Quartet works. But my favorite composer is definitely Gustav Mahler. AH! The pathos! And my favorite jazz guys are Chick Corea and Dave Holland.

Do feel free to post musical interests here if you happen to not have an instrumental or vocal talent! It'd be nice to know who likes what kind of music. Makes it easier to avoid those who find Britney Spears' "Toxic" to be a good addition to the American musical oeuvre. :-) I kid. Really. Or do I?

I shall copy this over in the FSP Cuss/Discuss forum.

I'm a pianist, but I can't get to NH until 2010, as I've bitched about endlessly elsewhere.

Russell Kanning

there are a few ... most of them are more in the rock band or jazz group style :)

amethyst sings and likes classical music and does some new stuff too.
varrin does jazz drumming

I like music, but can't make it.
Beethoven is my favorite

John is a guitarist and is often writing his own cool free state project-related songs. I saw a synthesizer at Kevin from Pembrokes house when I visited him, I assume he plays it.

I fancy myself a bit of an amateur singer-songwriter myself, although I've only been playing for a few months and I'm still working on my first song, which isn't overtly political. I only have a limited window of time between late afternoon and 9pm or so when I can play, and in that window of time I often have other stuff to do, so I don't get to practice as much as I'd like to.

The piano is so cool. I own an 88-key MIDI master-controller. It's hammer-weighted and everything! I hook it up to this Yamaha Motif sound generator, which I also own... good times. I like to fake/practice Bach and Shostakovich fugues.

And Varrin is a jazz drummer?!?!?! NICE. I haven't ever played in a combo, but I'd love to learn by doing. My "mad skillz" don't extend so far as jazz. Yet. I love it like Western Europeans love entitlements and freedom without responsibility, though.

I have a great deal of respect for Indian "stuff." I LOVE Indian food, and Indian classical music is amazing. The difficulty is in understanding it to the degree necessary to appreciate and love it.

Anyway, I'm now reminded of the Ph.D. musician who works for a bank and publishes anarcho-capitalist essays/articles on LewRockwell.com... can't remember his name... he writes about food, too.

Carry on potential posters!

I don't live NH but I do own a couple of turntables & few hundred records :D

Mostly electronic/techno... but I have some hip hop, latin, classical, & a decent amount of punk (I love mixing punk into a deep, dark electric beat).

Dave Ridley

dada sing wierd techno type stuff
put dada in front of microphone at studio and things will happen

Quantrill

I'd have to call myself a musician.  I'm currently writing stuff that will HOPEFULLY appeal to a wide range of musical tastes.

As for an ensemble, I played trombone for a long time, maybe I can dust it off and bring it with me to NH...

I'm more of a composer than a live performer. I'm mainly into industrial and electronic. I have a pretty good home studio including a real iso booth for recording vocals.

My husband plays the guitar and he's written songs for me and taped them, I think he's great!  He used to be in a band in High School, he can sing too (no high pitches, though).  I don't know if he'd be interested in getting into it again but I can ask! :)

I have the very very beginnings of a home studio, what with my CME 88 master-controller, my Motif ES and my Delta 1010LT Sound card... but that's it... I have Cubase for editing and recording (of which I have done very little) and Sibelius for music engraving (of which I do a great deal).

I think it's pretty groovy that you have an iso room for vocals... It seems that the lion's share of people sing who have any musical ability. A brass quintet would be awesome. As would a percussion/marimba quartet. The possibility of playing string quartets with a group of percussionists, or putting together a brass quartet/quintet is exciting, too.

Males singing high pitches is strange and awkward to me... In 17th-19th century Italy, they used to castrate young boys so that their voices wouldn't develop. That way they could comfortably sing in the high female range with the power and volume of a male. Females generally weren't allowed to sing in operas until about the 18th century, but "castrati" as they were called, were highly sought-after by directors (and women, as they couldn't become pregnant.........). ANYWAY!! Singing in the tenor, baritone or bass range is all that's necessary for singing in classical choirs. :-)

I want to start a school at some point. My friend (who will be in NH sooner or later) wants to do the same thing; she was educated at a Montessori school in Cali. I want to teach economics and music. I think it'd be fantastic to pass on my knowledge of the Western tradition of music to eager little people. Golly, I have a lot of things to do in my life - I had better get started...

I'm so excited to get to New Hampshire. The party starts when I arrive - I'm just that important!!  ;D :P        /sarcasm

I have a band out here in Utah. We've been looking for a singer for quite some time now.
Almost have them convinced they want to move to NH..may take a little more prodding and poking.

They have come around to the idea that there's too much government, too much tax, etc and that too much (if not all) government is the problem.

We play very heavy music, a bit of a cross between Incubus (new) and Anthrax (old) and TOOL with some jazz, ska, and other stylistic influences thrown in for good measure.

I know it's a long-shot (by about 2,379 miles), but we really need a freedom-minded individual to finish the lineup.

Downloaded and just listened to this one...  8) very nice, maybe it was cause I was watching the iTunes visualizer at the same time, but I think I might have transcended to a new level at one point. ;)

You guys are good, I enjoyed it thanks... any plans for lyrics, or is it just to be an instrumental?
