young people in keene, nightlife?

Keene seems to be the hotbed of free state activity.  However, the idea of moving to a town of 22k people is a bit unnerving to me.  My first choice for moving to NH so far is Manchester.  Since Keene is a college town, what does everyone do there for fun?  How's the nightlife?  Does everyone just drive to Boston for shows, theater, museums, dancing, etc?  Thanks everyone.

I don't think there's a lot of nightlife in Keene, unless you count things like hanging Lincoln in effigy.  If you like contra dancing, there's that.  There's a small theater that puts on plays.

I don't hear too many people driving to Boston for their fun.

If a town of 22k is unnerving to you .... you might just not be cut out to live here.

The college kids seem to like it here .... otherwise they would go elsewhere.

The front lines of the nonviolent revolution and a hopping nightlife are not mutually exclusive ... but they are also not inevitably linked. :)

I think you can make your own fun/nightlife/free state activity anywhere in NH. :)

scudiac

you mean to say, libertarians don't like to have fun?   :P

even freedom-fighters need to have fun every now and again.

Russell Kanning

actually free staters have been accused of doing nothing but partying

How often do you go to shows? .... and what kind?

What do you mean by "theater"?

If you lived in Keene, you would have to drive to other towns to go to museums.

What kind of dancing do you do?

For concerts the Colonial Theatre in Keene is a nice venue, a restored classic theatre, I've seen some good shows there and unlike the big city we parked right in front of the theatre.

You can also travel down to Northhampton Mass... they have the Calvin Theatre, another nice restored theatre... the Iron Horse which is a small club that has big name talent... Pearl Street night club which has two theatres where national acts play... the Pines an outdoor venue... U. Mass Amherst has shows also... and various other smaller clubs.

Northampton is very ... what's the word I'm looking for ... Lesbian.

I go out at least a couple of times a week.  Mostly weekends.  To one or more of the following:

shows = live music.  I mostly see indie rock bands, electronic dance music, djs, funk & soul and jazz.  Sometimes hip hop if the artist/group is good.

theater = live performance.  ie. plays, musicals, ballet, etc

I usually go to dance clubs that play electronic-type dance music or funk & soul.  Also, clubs that cater to specific theme nights like "80's night" or "funk night."

College people, how is the house show/party scene?

scudiac

This question is more for the college crowd.  How is the indie music scene in Keene?  There has to be at least some bands playing fairly often.  Is this the case?  Any links to myspace pages or something where I could take a listen?

I think you should ask this of the nice the people over at freekeene.com

There will be a couple hundred people at my house tonight. Keene has cracked down on such 'illegal' parties over the past 10 years, but there are still plenty of them.

Keene also has a fairly good bar scene. There are quite a few bars along main street and in the downtown area.

cracked down on house parties?  How so?  It's private property.  Are they using justification like "noise complaints?"
