First, a little background:

QuoteIn declaring New Hampshire as my domicile, I am subject to the laws of the State of New Hampshire which
apply to all residents, including laws requiring me to register my motor vehicles and apply for a New
Hampshire?s driver?s license within 60 days of becoming a resident.

Yesterday a friendly "criminal investigator" showed up to my house.  He wanted to know why I'd crossed out the above paragraph on the voter registration form.  He seemed most concerned about the 60 day registration part.  I told him that agreeing to that paragraph was absurd, but did not explain why as well as I should have.

I'll let Julia post her interactions with this guy when she gets a chance.  We'll certainly discuss this on FTL tonight.  I'm thinking of emailing the investigator and inviting him to listen, in case he doesn't know we host a radio show.

I wonder if they were just going thru the files or...
they were tipped off.
or
someone read those threads and called someone
or
they heard about you and decided to dig.

interesting.

Why did you say anything?

Russell Kanning

Seems like a good reason to exit their system and not vote.

As someone who is planning on running for city council in the fall and looking for votes,  I would have to disagree.

It seems like a good reason to change the system.

Well then ... maybe that is what you say to the investigator when he shows up. :)

Have you crossed out that part on your form Toby? It would be funny if they came visiting 20 houses in Keene for that. :)

I registered a few years ago and didn't even notice, although I will have to switch polling stations when I move... :icon_pirat:

I think someone spotted the crossed out paragraph and alerted them.  This guy didn't know if I had a phone number.

I realize he was poking around for something to use against me.  I'm not too concerned.  I also want him to know that I'm not a pushover.  Besides, he was being friendly.  Future interactions will be recorded or emailed.

Interesting
I wondered if they even looked at them.

Being friendly when they are acting friendly allows for some level of interaction so I emailed him today.. no reply yet:

QuoteSince you contacted me and you seem to be a reasonable guy, I hope you wouldn't mind answering a question.

In declaring New Hampshire as my domicile, I am subject to the laws of the State of New Hampshire which
    apply to all residents

How could anyone agree to that statement?

In order to agree to be subject to ALL laws in NH, I'd have to know what they are.  In order to know what they are, I'd have to spend my life reading them.  In order to read the laws, I'd have to understand legalese, and I don't.  Even if I did, I'd have to read the laws in my spare time as I am an adult and work for a living, so I don't have much spare time.  What spare time I do have, I'd prefer to spend with Julia.  Even if I were to spend all my spare time on reading laws, I'd probably never finish in my lifetime - there are lots of laws.  Plus, even if I could finish, by that time some laws would have changed and more would have been added.

This is quite clearly an impossible task, so how can anyone actually explicitly agree to that statement?   I'd love your thoughts.

P.S.  Did you know Julia and I host an internationally syndicated radio program?  I look forward to discussing this issue on-air tonight.  You can tune in at the website in my signature.

I would like to see more new movers doing this.  The guy drove from Concord, it would keep them busy!

They are not asking you to agree with it. It is a statement. If you declare NH as your domicle, you are subject to the laws of NH. It doesn't matter if you agree to it or not.

The way it's worded- from the first person, as if you are saying it yourself, and then you are signing at the bottom (I presume), it sounds like you are agreeing to that statement when you register to vote.
