I've been meaning to try a bicycle ride between Manchester-Concord. It's 17 miles mostly along 3A though, and there are two potentially hazardous spots I can think of. Oh, and I need to get a bike.

How hazardous are we talking? And yes a bike would help with the bicycle ride.  :P  ;)

One's a large 3-way intersection with a light and a lot of traffic, the other is a cloverleaf where it crosses I-93. Nothing too dangerous if you're experienced.

Are you coming to PORCfest?  I came to NH in Feb. for the Liberty Forum and got a job offer!  I moved up here one month later.  Maybe something similar can happen to you!  Had I not forced myself to quit procrastinating and make the trip to NH, I would probably still be in MO making excuses as to why the time isn't right to move, yadda yadda...

Yes I will be at Porcfest. If someone made me a job offer in which I was a fit, I would come home immediately. My degree is in media and communications. I am an office manager of a production company and assist celebrities (don't hate me it pays well and it can be fun) with everything in their life. I've worked for A list actors / artists and have traveled all over the world with them, run their life both personal and professional, manage their estates and work schedules. Ummm.. maybe I should bring my resume with me.  :D

Have you seen this directory?

http://www.nhfilmdirectory.com/directory.php

It is the NH Film Bureau's list of services in NH.... Maybe it's worth sending your resume to some of these companies.

I'm sure they all are -- they can afford good accountants.

QuoteManchester is as bike friendly as you are going to get. No, there aren't bike lanes everywhere, but commercial, business and residences are intermingled in much of the city and there are fewer hills than most other places in New Hampshire
I agree with this--Manchester is very bike friendly. I don't drive anywhere in Manchester, unless I'm in a hurry or I have to get gas ;).
To be honest, I think it's a lot safer to ride bikes than to drive because of the constant stop lights and the difficulty I have seeing around corners to make sure intersections are clear (they like to put things like trees, poles, fences, and other cars in the way to block your view). With a bike, I can see everything :)

Oh, and Quantrill--I ride my bike on the sidewalk. I'm not one of those bicyclists who thinks she's a car. I know what would happen to me if I were hit by a car--it would be a lot less pretty than if a car were to hit another car.

Recently I walked about half of the route you are referring to...there are several areas where the edge of the road is quite narrow and the guardrails mean you either have to walk through the weeds on the other side and risk falling down the hill...or you walk on the roadway side of the guardrail...I did this and many vehicles changed lanes to give me more room...those are the places where I was most uncomfortable...

Vehicular traffic in NH is aggressive...and quite congested at times in certain areas...
That being said, a very large percentage of those drivers show good caution around pedestrians and bicycles...

Quote from: GraniteForge on May 23, 2007, 09:38 PM NHFTThe sidewalk is for pedestrians (and, inexplicably, also for those rolling danger zones called Segways).

That's not inexplicable.  Segways are made here in NH.  Gotta love convenient legislation... ::)

I see people riding Segways all the time here in Manchester. I have no idea how those things keep their balance on the crappy sidewalks.

"Aggressive" also depends on the area. In the North Country, it's positively relaxed, polite, and you're likely to get a "No, you go ahead!" wave.

When we were walking along Main St. in Lancaster, in the closest thing to rush hour that they'll ever see, locals were very quick to brake and let us cross the street. Had to watch out for the Quebecois, though.

Even in Concord and Manchester, I never saw anything I'd call "aggressive" driving, at least not compared to Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, or the Baltimore/DC area. "Slightly busy", at worst. Then again, I wasn't there when the Boston commuters were doing their thing.

My wife and I flew out to NH for a week to check it out once we decided to move.  Being so small (compared to the People's Republic of Illinois from where I regrettably hail), we drove around most of the state (seacoast area excluded due to flooding).  If you get a chance to tour the state before your move by all means do so.  It gave us a real flavor.  Although we liked some areas more than others, I can honestly say there were few places we wouldn't have been happy.

With many people mentioning Keene and Concord, we ended up in the town of Croydon in Sullivan county, which is sort of between the two.  Such a rural setting is not much of an option if you have no car.  But it makes several work locations accessible within an hour.

But be warned.  While researching NH towns, we were alarmed at the variation in property tax rates.  It wasn't uncommon to see two nearly identical towns with property taxes rates that differed by 2:1!  There is a website that lists the tax rates for various towns.  I'll try to find it and post it.  (As I recall, some towns near Keene were downright obscene)
