Growth at GT Solar may add up to 80 new jobs

MERRIMACK ? The planning board last night approved a site plan that would enable GT Solar to more than double the size of its manufacturing facilities and hire as many as 80 new workers in the next 18 months.

Jim Bosco, vice president of operations for the company, said that GT Solar will add an additional 60,647 square feet to the current 56,000-square-foot facility at 243 Daniel Webster Highway.

The manufacturing center will remain in Merrimack. Company representatives said they plan to add a third shift for production. Arenco Inc. of Amherst, who built the facility in 2002, will now work on the addition. Bosco said construction could begin within three months.

GT Solar makes turnkey manufacturing equipment that enables companies to go into business to produce their own solar panels for the retail market.

Products include a poly-silicon reactor that enables manufacturers to produce high-purity silicon, giant furnaces that melt the silicon down into a rubbery form and slicers that cut the silicon into blocks for solar panels.

Worldwide demand for alternative energy sources has resulted in sales growth of 30 percent per year for the last five years, with more than $190 million in back orders for the company.

Founder Kedar Gupta sold the majority shares of his company to GFI Energy Ventures in 2005 to obtain the investment capital needed to expand.

GT Solar this year opened a sales center in Shanghai to supplement an existing sales center in Montana. Asian and European markets, along with the west coast of the United States, account for the highest demand for solar panels.

Brian Logue, vice president of human resources, said the company "is currently evaluating wage structures to ensure that we have a total compensation package that is competitive in global markets."

Logue said the company will have a wide range of positions available, including manufacturers, technicians, quality engineers, logistics, customer service, field engineers, project managers, mechanical and electrical engineers and managers.

The company is introducing a talent management strategy that "speaks to how we approach people, how we communicate, how we inform people around key functions and receive feedback. Rather than top-down, this should be more of a partnership," Logue said.
