I have decided to promote a very simple philosophy for a society to live by. I call "Only the Willing", a simplified view of Liberty, and how people can get along. It won't be unfamiliar to Libertarians, but it expresses, simply, what the essence of some of our beliefs, beyond ZAP.
On the Shorty Dawkins website I have a simple story to illustrate it, called Farmer's Hall

Here are two new songs I wrote for Shorty Dawkins

I'll post the music to ShortyDawkins.com shortly.  ;)

I Come From Upton's Corners

Now gath-er round and hear me,
I'll tell you all a sto-ry,
"Bout a town I real-ly know well.
The town where I was born,
On a warm Sep-tem-ber morn,
So my Dad-dy al-ways did tell.

The town is Up-ton's Cor-ners,
It's in New Hamp-shire's bor-ders,
Not too far from White-field that is true.
The folks in town are neat,
And they real-ly can't be beat,
Take your stock and give you what's due.

Yes I come from Up-ton's Cor-ners,
The place I know so well,
Make my home in Up-ton's Cor-ners,
If you should ev-er vi-sit give me a yell.

There's farms a-long the hill-sides,
The saw-mill on the bank-side,
Of the Riv-er Quick that runs strong.
There's Mil-lie's Gen-'ral Store,
With the sign up-on the door,
Let-ting folks know that they be-long.

Now if you have a hank-'rin,
For good Brown Ale it's wait-in'
Ov-er at old Ca-leb John-son's Bar.
A bank is right next door,
"cross the street's a Hard-ware store,
Ne-ver do you have to go far.

Yes I come from Up-ton's Cor-ners,
The place I know so well,
Make my home in Up-ton's Cor-ners,
If you should ev-er vi-sit give me a yell.

The Far-mer's Hall sits wait-ing,
For an-y kind of meet-ing,
Danc-es ev-'ry Sat-ur-day night.

Mad Moun-tain Jack can play,
On his fid-dle an-y way,
Mol-ly's danc-ing real-ly takes flight.

While Ed-na Mae and Char-lie
Are laugh-ing loud and heart-y,
At a stor-y Short-y loves to tell.

The Hall is real-ly big,
Room e-nough to dance a jig,
Mil-lie danc-es pret-ty darn well.

Yes I come from Up-ton's Cor-ners,
The place I know so well,
Make my home in Up-ton's Cor-ners,
If you should ev-er vi-sit give me a yell.

We have a lit-tle say-ing,
It says, "On-ly the will-ing",
That we al-ways try to live by.

We do not force our way,
We let folks go 'bout their day,
Ne-ver need a reas-on or why.

If you and I should dif-fer,
It real-ly does-n't mat-ter,
Neigh-bors have a right to what they think.

Just go to Ca-leb's Bar,
It is not so ver-y far,
Set-tle mat-ters ov-er a drink.

Yes I come from Up-ton's Cor-ners,
The place I know so well,
Make my home in Up-ton's Cor-ners,
If you should ev-er vi-sit give me a yell.

The Bear Cub

Ga-ther 'round good neigh-bors,
Here's a tale that's true I swear.
'Bout how Shor-ty Daw-kins,
Saved Mad Moun-tain from a bear.

Poor Mad Moun-tain, in the out-house,
Right out-side a black bear sat,
Dar-ing Jack to come out-side,
But Jack he would have none of that.

Jack he screamed and hol-lered,
Raised a ruck-us, yes in-deed.
All the noise it woke the house-hold,
They found Jack in di-re need.
Shor-ty could-n't help but laugh,
The strang-est sight he'd ev-er seen.

Shor-ty, he stopped laugh-ing,
Though it took him quite a spell.
Jack heard Shor-ty laugh-ing,
Told him he could go to Hell.

Jack he could-n't see the black bear,
Did-n't know the cub was small,,
Not much dan-ger to Mad Moun-tain,
Nor to Shor-ty, none at all.

Shor-ty al-ways thought that
He could stare a Black Bear down.
Turned a-round to face the bear cub,
On his face a fear-ful frown.
Ev-'ry one a-greed it was
The Strang-est sight they'd ev-er seen.

Soon the bear cub whimp-ered,
Came and gave his boots a sniff,
Jack he made his ex-it,
From the out-house in a jiff.

Mean-while Shor-ty and the bear cub,
Seemed to get a-long real well,
Shor-ty did-n't mind the bear cub,
Had a most pe-cul-iar smell.

As the folks were watch-ing,
Shor-ty's sleeve the bear did tug,
Shor-ty seemed to un-der-stand
And gave that bear a great big hug.
All a-greed it was the cut-est sight
that they had ev-er seen.

Just then, from the woods there came a loud fer-o-cious roar,
All the friends they raced to Get them-selves in-side the door.
They all knew that roar could on-ly mean that Ma-ma bear was near.
Look-ing for her lit-tle bear cub, that she made ex-treme-ly clear.

None of them were will-ing to stand in that Ma-ma's way,
Bet-ter to e-scape the dan-ger, live to laugh an-oth-er day.
They a-greed it was the strang-est night that they had ev-er seen.

People ask me if Shorty ever got married and had children. Well, no. I wrote a song that explains it.

http://www.shortydawkins.com/Songs.html

The song is:

A Boy, A Girl
A boy, a girl, a love they once shared,
Their hearts to each they bared,
But something happened To drive them apart,
That boy and girl never mended their broken hearts.

The boy he vowed to love not again,
To never forget the pain.
So he hid his feelings he hid his shame,
The boy he never told a soul this girl's name.

The girl she tried to love once again,
Her heart still filled with pain,
She never managed to find someone new,
She never blamed him, but never knew what to do.

This boy, this girl, their love never died,
Though to their hearts they lied.
Their love it lasted through both their lives,
Though this boy never took this girl for his wife.

Through sep'rate ways, and far, far apart,
The love stayed in their hearts,
Love never passes it never will die,
It echoes in aching hearts that ever ask why.

Woohoo, Shorty's back!   ;D :D :)

Shorty just took a short vacation.  8)

I've learned that the music on ShortyDawkins.com doesn't play in all browsers, for some reason or other. If it doesn't play in the background when you get to the lyrics page, then that is the problem. I would be happy to email you a copy of the midis if you request it.  :D

You can put a link to the midi file on the page somewhere.   8)

Congratulations! You've killed off Shorty Dawkins.

Back when all this madness started I did a web search, and found that Shorty died quite a long time ago. I forget his real first name, but it was listed in the obit, along with the names of relatives.

Now if you search all you can find is links to the fictional shorty.

Nice to see Shorty back, Alan. 8)

Thanks Scott!  ;) I'm thinking of two projects about Shorty:
1. Create a Shorty Dawkins Songbook
2. A book with some adventures of Shorty and the gang. Also, some pranks they played on each other. (Harmless pranks that were clever or funny, but not hurtful. Any ideas would be appreciated.) I will create a map of Upton's Corners. (So you can find your way around.  ;)) Talk about the things they did to help people out. Also, a section describing the Philosophy of "Only the willing" that they lived by. Maybe a section of helpful hints for the home and farm.  :)

Unfortunately no. I'm sure it was somewhere in the U.S. I think he died in the 1930s or 40s - might have been earlier. From what I can remember of the few things I read, he was somewhat of a character.  :)

Maybe I just didn't search hard enough, or use the right search terms. He should still be out there somewhere.

AlanM

I just did a search with my AOL search, and found only 6 results.

Maybe Shorty was named after this guy.
