Imagine if some of the students at Virginia Tech had been allowed to carry firearms on campus.  Unfortunately, a bill to allow just that died in committee back in January:

QuoteVirginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

Perhaps not so much today.

It is tragic, isn't it? The response should be pressure to increase personal defense by whatever means, not increasing exposure by limiting self defense. The gun issue aside, what if the dozens of people faced with a crazed man yesterday had had some form of self defense training? Someone would likely have been brave enough to stop him.

The security of people in a crowded rather public venue can't be accomplished by laws of any sort. We can't let people continue to think that policy and gun control and police can protect us from either criminals or crazies.

exactly - this incident should prove just that.

unfortunately all the sheep will probably support legislation that will do just the opposite.  We have 2 major colleges in my town (plus a community college, tech schools, & a military academy).  On the 5 o'clock news last night we already had interviews w/their admins saying how they were stepping up security & initiating zero tolerance policies on weapons.

Keep the sheeple disarmed so the wolves have plenty of prey...

Brilliant!?!?

on the noon news today they had an article about the pueblo SWAT team (about 30min south of the Springs).  They were in a local high schools doing walk throughs & gave the statement that the incident at VA Tech highlights the importance of increasing tacticle police teams.

Shows how dumb cops are... The only thing in the world that would've stopped the crazy person before he committed suicide would be an armed student. On the news, they started talking about high capacity this and automatic that. Funny, considering the new Brady Bill has been intoduced back in Feb. Too bad that V Tech didn't have a gun club.

watching CBS news right now -

They are saying how "easy" & "quick" it was for the shooter to get a gun.  All he had to do was go to the gun store, show 3 forms of ID, wait 20min for the State Police background check & he had the G19 for about $500.

Already too many hoops to jump through if you ask me.

a side note - EVERY single bit of news I have seen so far about this (& other gun oriented stories as of late) all refer to a magazine as a clip - I may be sounding picky here but that is like finger nails on a chalk board to me.

You expect the media to know what they're talking about? That's entirely unrealistic!

there was a similar report on abc tonight. sickening, how they were trying to make the already too difficult process of buying a firearm sound TOO EASY. what the hell is wrong with these people? how can any conclusion be drawn from this situation other than to DECREASE gun laws??

So, the generic 3-5 day "cooling off period" before someone can pick up a handgun from a FFL is state-specific? O.o

What cooling off period? That must be just whatever state you're stuck in.

SpeedPhreak

pretty much - its all state by state.

last time I bought a pistol in CO it was at a gun show.  I bought from a dealer, showed my ID, they called the CBI & in less than 10 min I had my new piece.

any thing considered a rifle or non-combat shotgun (ie no pistol grip or short barrel) can be bought over the counter no questions asked - this however may have changed.  Its been a while since I've bought or even shopped for a gun.

Same with all the school shootings, this one was on prescription psychotic drugs:

QuoteSeveral students and professors described Cho as a sullen loner. Authorities said he left a rambling note raging against women and rich kids. News reports said that Cho, a 23-year-old senior majoring in English, may have been taking medication for depression and that he was becoming increasingly erratic.

Uh, yeah...  where have you been?

We also don't have a "gun free school zones" law in the Free State, and there is no minimum age on CCW licenses (IIRC, the youngest licensee was 12).  Odd, we've also never had a school shooting, to the best of my knowledge.
