No matter how much it will cost, or how much it will inconvenience Americans who do pay taxes, they're desperate to get at the people who either don't pay everything the government thinks they owe, or don't pay anything at all. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson actually tried to warn them off and got his ass chewed out for it.

They did the same thing with the "Alternative Minimum Tax" crap to hastily punish less than two hundred (155, IIRC) households who "were paying no tax".

So history repeats itself: first we have the income tax, 'targetted only at the super rich' at its inception, now affecting almost every single working person in the whole country. Then we have the AMT, intended for 155-ish victims, now affecting around 23 million... Gee, I wonder if this new "tax gap fix" will be any different?

No, the fixes they want will squeeze EVERYONE with onerous new reporting requirements, millions of trees' worth of new paperwork, and will only wring out a few billion dollars anyway. Hardly worth the effort.

Though I almost wish they would go ahead and try it, so that people will start revolting in larger numbers.
