what is this like in NH.  I broke the whole FSP thing to my parents tonigt, after i convinced them that i wasnt joining a group wanting to murder people they were cool with it.  they still want me to take my car through emisions testing however.  whats the situation in NH on this issue?

As far as I know, you take your car to a mechanic, they look at it funny and then give you a sticker, and that's that.

NH has had a safety inspection for a while (brakes, lights, no windows cracked, etc).  A few years ago, they added the emissions testing.  Actually it's more of a computer testing.  They connect the computer from the state mandated monopoly to the OBDII connector and scan the vehicles computer.  If no codes are set on the vehicle, it passes.

So, basically, it passes if the "Check Engine" light isn't on? :P

And the nearest auto parts store will reset the computer for free(usually) so you do that right before you go to the inspector...lol.

Or just drive a pre-OBDII car :)

Depends on how new your car is.  I believe there's a specific cutoff.

If it's older than that, all they do is the safety inspection.  If it's newer, they just check the computer for error codes.  If the "service engine soon" light isn't lit, that typically means you have no error codes.  It's not a full dyno emissions test like other states may require.

Hey, look, it's a "new and exciting program" to take your money by force!

If you have trouble with a persistent error code that keeps popping back up, it would be worth buying your own code reader. You can clear the code in the inspection station parking lot.  ;)

I forgot to mention that for now diesel vehicles are exempt.
