My name is Nick and I am from Pittsburgh, PA.  I am planning to move to NH this summer as a part of the Free State Project and to campaign for Ron Paul. Why is rent so high in NH??  I am currently seeking anyone that is looking for a roomate or has a spare bedroom to rent out.  The cheapest rent I have found is $500/mo and I definitely can not afford that.  For the time being I will not have transportation so I am looking for a place that is conveniently located, maybe in Concord or Manchester where I could find a job in walking distance, or could ride a bike or take public transportation.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I'm not sure why housing is so expensive here. You could attribute it to supply and demand ... except that Indianapolis (where I'm from) has more people than the whole state of new hampshire (greater demand) in far less area (less supply) so you would think that Indy would have much more expensive rent.  Not so.

Maybe the oppressive property taxes?

Lloyd Danforth

Probably higher taxes, insurance and maintenence costs.

I've done a lot of looking myself. Post on craigslist.org and see if you can find a shared situation that is less expensive. Perhaps someone on this forum will have a room in Manch or Concord for you.    :)

Welcome, Nick!

It's a mistake to just compare rent where you are now, to rent in NH. You also have to compare how much less you'll be paying in taxes, and realize that you'll have more money for rent.

Yup.  I lost over 6% in hourly pay rate when I moved, initially, and still got about a 50% increase in take-home pay, versus Maine.

For those of us who don't pay the voluntary federal or state income tax tax to begin with, it doesn't make much of a difference. Rent is high in New Hampshire it's just the way it is. But Liberty in our lifetime is worth it.  :D

Oh, the lack of sales tax, and generally lower tax burden help, in any case.  The income taxes are only a slice of the pie, and a lot of the others are taken out far below the consumer level. :)

Yes true! but I'm not a big consumer either.

Heck, in Maine they tax half the grocery items people buy. :o  It's really just plain ridiculous, over there.

Uh, in MO they tax everything.  Maine seems like a very tax-friendly place if you come from the midwest.  The sales tax in MO applies to everything.  Food, sneakers, haircuts, etc...

Though the taxes in NH are better than Maine.

Last I heard, Maine still had a higher overall tax burden...
