AltExpo #1! at PorcFest07

OK, the same crew of misfits and malcontents is putting on the Alternatives Expo again as a side thingie at an FSP event.

The website framework is set up (http://altexpo.org) and content is being added daily by presenters, organizers and coordinators in a collaborative effort.

And, before you warm up your criticism fingers to hit that keyboard because the site looks hokey, volunteer to make it look better, if you've got the skills and imagination. We need an artistic coordinator!

We're also looking for volunteer help to suggest topics and find speakers, promote the event online, design and handout fliers at PorcFest, etc. If you want to present a topic there, email Caleb@AltExpo.org or me at Jack@AltExpo.org. We should have plenty of time slots available still. It's the peoples' PorcFest!

If you haven't heard of the AltExpo, that's to be expected. This is sort of our first one, excepting the fact that we did a prototype run at the Liberty Forum back in the winter that we called AltExpo #0.

Check out the site: http://altexpo.org, fire off your suggestions (mail link at the bottom of each page), volunteer to help - let's make this a great and inspiring event - and a great party every nght!

PS: We have a block of campsites down in the Boardwalk area, so if you're looking for space, we have some - we're trying to help the FSP recover the money they spent locking down these sites. They're right on the periphery of the activities field, which makes it easy to find your way home after the bonfires!

Are there any naturist events planned for the alt expo?

I would imagine that there are still open time-slots available. Want to do it? Plan it and make it happen  :)

Caleb

I will schedule it in the tent (enclosed) if there is enough demand ... Or if you'd like to speak on naturism lawofattraction ... I have room for another speaker, and you can set the clothing requirements as you wish in the enclosure.

I think that at the very least speaking about naturism would be really neat; after all, the whole point of AltExpo is to discover alternatives to the accepted paradigms. I'd listen to talk on it, and probably many other open-minded folks would as well  :)

Isn't all of Porcfest an alt expo? ;D
nope ... the fsp leadership is more "inside the system" guys

I am looking for alt expo guys that would like to join me for a panel discussion of "outside the political system activism" issues on the Porcfest schedule Saturday afternoon.

I will also be doing a "Welcome to the Shire" question and answer time at the altexpo on Friday. I will be talking about voluntaryism and civil disobedience and such. :)

well, the proposed schedule is up for the speakers. There will probably be lots of changes, so if you have an idea or something, look the schedule over and let me know. We're also going to do movies, but I probably let someone else take care of the scheduling for that. Or if they want me to do it, I can do it the Tuesday when I get there. The thing about scheduling movies is that you never really know which movies are going to be there until such time as the movies actually arrive.  I probably will schedule 4 movies from the 7:00 pm-1:00 am on Friday and Saturday, (just so we can be sure that there will be some really awesome movies.)  So if anyone has a really awesome movie they want to show, speak up now!

We have a tent for the movies. (10 by 30). It's an enclosed tent, and we could pretty much run movies in there all day long.  I doubt there will be enough movies to do that all week long, though, so there will probably be lots of time for people to schedule things in the tent area, if they want to.

Like I said, if you want to do the naturist thing, you could schedule a time in there. I could probably also schedule you to speak. I imagine there would probably be lots of interest in the topic of naturism, if for nothing else than that people are curious. So it would be a great opportunity for you to address the concerns that a lot of people have. If you are doing it as a speech, then you'd probably get more people to participate if you let them keep their clothes on.  :) At any rate, you don't have to decide that right now, because like I said, there will likely be plenty of opportunities in the tent area.

The "It's time to shoot the bastards" folks are definitely outside the political system. Are you inviting them?

John Barnes (John@AltExpo.org) has a few he wants to get shown and Charles Davidson (Charles@AltExpo.org) has agreed to manage the rest of the video schedule. Steve Goodale (Steve@AltExpo.org) is bringing his collection of videos and he'll have some for sale (usu. pretty cheap). I've (Jack@AltExpo.org) got a collection and Jeremy's (Jeremy@AltExpo.org) got some, so we won't run out of things to show. We just have to be careful not to lose anyone's. I have a little labeller if people want to label theirs so they can find them at the end if everyone sorts 'em out at the end.

A tentative list is on the AltExpo site, left sidebar menu item "Alt. videos", or click here: http://altexpo.org/videos - Charles will keep working on a master list and hopefully we can have a handout to pass around. We're going to have some college students (CollegeStudents@AltExpo.org) coming up and maybe they can work for their keep by passing out handouts.

We won't actually have the tent until Wednesday, so could have it set up Wed. night. Hunter (yep, Hunter@AltExpo.org) found one that we purchased for less than the rentals cost - hope it's not too cheesy. The projectors we have access to are loaned and are expensive, so the owners are very particular about the careful handling they should receive and that'll be one of Charles' jobs - to protect the equipment. One thing to note is that you should not touch the screen (this'll be interesting). Steve has a 10X10 screen which we could set up outdoors for nighttime viewing, but it'll take a 2X4 framework to hold it up.

Thanks Caleb@AltExpo.org  ;D

I looked at the schedule, however, and am most curious about "3:00 pm - 4:00 pm: Bearers of Light. Presented by Paul DesLauriers". Is there any more info available on what that's about?

After talking to Paul earlier today and going over 3 or 4 possible topics, he (Paul@AltExpo.org) decided to present a more benign-sounding topic based on what he perceived the audience to be interested in: Effective Community Activism http://altexpo.org/activism, but he's the author of Bearers of Light, which he'll mention towards the end of his talk: http://www.beareroflight.com/ . He'll have copies of his book there for sale or you can buy it from his site.

He thought talking about the spiritual side of activism might scare a bunch of people away, but I stood up for you Alties - I told him you could take it!

I could join you on that, Russell@AltExpo.org  ;D - I don't think I've ever gotten my position across very well - I'd like to give it a shot (uh, that's not a bullet thing...)

jaqeboy

Could someone post the AltExpo info over on the FSP forum and other forums. I haven't been to the other forums and wouldn't know the right areas to post this info. Plus I have to do a little more setup stuff and then head out to try to earn a living, etc.

It's looking like this will be another cool experience and more and more people want to present and to join in - Caleb's got me scheduled at 930AM when no one will be up to hear me (again  :( ) - maybe I'll have to finally draft a handout for the latecomers so they'll get a chance to read what the whole AltExpo idea is about.
