I don't know about "below market price". I paid $10 to see him last week.

You were lucky.  I was talking to a guy over the weekend who recently paid $65 to see Stanhope.  I paid $24 last year when he was performing in Mass.

What makes you think pdf files suck?

the proprietary software is a resource hog, and often locks up computers.

Oh, so you meant to say that Adobe Acrobat sucks. We agree on that! Thankfully, Acrobat isn't required to create, view, modify, or print .pdf files. I don't have a copy of it on my computer, but I can do all of the above without it.

And yes, the files are large. That's an unavoidable consequence when you're creating documents that will look the same on all platforms, without worrying about fonts and image handling.

But they shouldn't look the same on all platforms. That's one of the big problems with "designers".

Changing the font size, in particular, is very important to some people.

And why the hell would you use something intended for print when you are using a computer screen?

PDF (AKA Proprietary Document Format) is essentially PostScript, which is a computer language for telling a printer how to format a document. Documents should be data, not code; as that opens up a world of hacking possibilities.

PDFs are meant to be printed. This is why making them look identical everywhere is important: You want things like layout, the flow of the text, and especially things like page count and placement of items on the page, to be identical across-the-board. People using them for documents not intended to be printed are abusing the technology.

In that case, what program do you use to work with pdf files?

PDF size can vary greatly depending on just how you created the PDF. If all you care about is making a PDF for printing consistently, you can get the tightest PDFs by using the "print to file" feature, then converting the resulting file to a PDF. If, however, you use an application's "Export to PDF" or similar feature, it often includes more cruft in the file such as hyperlinks and tables of content, which inflate the file size.

[Personally, I used to loathe PDFs, but I've been doing more work with them recently since I've begun creating content meant exclusively for printing and not screen display.]

Mostly Preview, but all the underlying PostScript technology is native in MacOS X. Every single app can print-to-PDF, for instance.

Many people are using PDFs when they shouldn't. The technology was created so recipients could be guaranteed a copy that is identical to the original. That's important when it comes to business and legal documents, or to show authenticity. A PDF is supposed to be like a fax, but without the transmission loss (especially after multiple transmittals).

When the content is what counts rather than the specific format, then it's stupid to use PDF.

I would warn the squeemish they might want to stay away from the section on abortion. The kiddie porn bit was pretty much the funniest thing I have ever heard.

Puke

I laughed my ass off at Stanhope's bit in the "Aristocrats" film.
Fibrous boils, hilarious!

Friday

Don't forget, tickets are on sale now at www.lpnh.org and at Murphy's Taproom.   :occasion14:
