But as far as I know, it has never yet been tried by the Porcupine community in New Hampshire. There are individuals who have been public about their personal dislike for other individuals.  There are a few individuals who have been banned, either temporarily or permanently, from this and other discussion fora for their behavior.  But there has never been a widespread attempt to shun anyone, with the possible exception of Zack Bass, who was told by a few people that they would not welcome him to New Hampshire if he chose to move here.

Did you forget about your own attempt at shunning Jim Perry? I seem to remember support for it was quite broad, and it was quite successful at getting him to finally step up and pay his debts.
No, I have not forgotten my post about J.P. (which makes no mention of the word "shun").  Seems to me he paid back the LPNH because he was embarassed about being publicly outed for his poor behavior, not because anyone had shunned him.  I continued to see him and chat with him at various events after that post.

It's interesting to see how some other people, after being publicly outed for what are far worse actions, not only have no shame about it, they actually try to play themselves off as victims, and ask others to help them.  At least JP was man enough to look me in the eye and say "I know I've been an asshole".

This is basically just the free market in action, no?

If you read the whole thread, you'll see that I said the exact same thing.

QuoteA large number of people are shunning Beth, myself included; others not. We'll see how that works out.
Yes, yes we will.

Russell Kanning

i agree with you guys that some social action has brought about some good reactions.

JP never paid us back a tiny amount .... I guess he only wants to stay in good graces in the political circles he runs in.

Shuvom has never paid me the $300 i was going to pass on to Roger for the 2 most excellent videos covering porcupine meetings he commissioned. i guess he didn't care  about the project anymore, or his good standing in my eyes. i saw him at the liberty forum, but didn't get a chance to ask him about it. I guess he is still around.

QuotePerhaps something along the lines of that organization that Cathleen, Mike F. and Alan formed a few years ago, the one with the weird Irish name that escapes me at the moment, would work.

Wasn't it "Truath"?

Shunning was mentioned in comment #8, and ostracize in #11. Maybe it wasn't your intent to shun/ostracize/whatever, but that's what it quickly turned into, and it seems to have worked to a large extent.

I guess I misunderstand what you mean by shunning then. What happened to J.P. is how I imagine the concept works—public notice that a person has done a bunch of bad stuff, to get other people to put pressure on them to either do the right thing, or be cut off from future opportunities. That letter basically told everybody, here's this guy whom you should not trust with money—don't get into business arrangements with him, don't put him in charge of your financials, don't lend him money, &c.. That's effectively shunning, no?

I don't know anyone else around here who's committed any acts of aggression worse than the theft and fraud that J.P. did. (I do know of a couple people who've been irresponsible with money and commitments in a very similar manner as J.P. has, and still not admitted it; however, it's not my intent to turn this thread into a debate about shunning specific individuals, so I won't go into that here.)

I did. By the way, is there any particular reason why you sound like you're trying to start an argument with someone who was basically agreeing with you?

Some people take some of this stuff way to seriously.

Shun Anthony!
Several already have!  Ignored by 7 people? Dude, is that a record?

Really?  That's awesome.  It is not a record. SgtUSMC has 8 people ignoring him.  Guess I just have to work harder.
Go for the gold!!  I just got my first ignore in the past week or so; I'm so proud!   :icon_pirat:

Sometimes keeping your distance from a group or giving space to someone, whom you don't agree, is very healthy. Spitefulness is wrong, blacklisting is unnecessary. When we tend to be upset with others, its easier to make space and take time to reflect on our personal motivations and goals. Some people who you thought would pull through for you, don't, and may be set in his/her own ideals and you can't change it. It happens with family alot, Love trust and respect can be compromised over differences in perspective. Time and humility will heal all wounds.

I hate losing respect from others so if I were shunned by peers or friends, or family, I would feel regret and resentment, but as long as I am not targeted and attacked, verbally, spitefully,or physically, I would make it my goal to regain trust... Shunning can be effective and healthy for personally growth. Moderation is the Key. IMO
