That's why I quibble over calling it a "permit" when that word appears nowhere in the law.

error

And what's the substantive difference between a permit and a license?

Here's my summary of the law:
Without a license...
You can have the pistol openly loaded on your person at all times (so long as the grip is viewing it's open enough for the law, so a pocket holster is fine without a permit)
You can carry the pistol concealed and seperate from a magazine full of ammo at all times
You can carry the pistol in a car and seperate from a magazine full of ammo (even if it's in the grip but not "plugged in") at all times.

You require a license to...
Carry it concealed and loaded
Carry it loaded in your car

Licenses cost $10 and are available from your local chief of police within 14 days. If you know him personally, expect it within a few minutes-hours of submitting it.

To make sure I'm understanding this right:  you can carry a concealed pistol in your pocket at all times (even in your car) as long as it's empty and you can carry a fully loaded clip in your other pocket at all times (even in your car).  And doing this would break no law nor require any permit or license??

Correct.  I'm not sure about the "in the grip but not "plugged in"" part of aries' list, and I'd want to see caselaw on that.  I can see a court claiming that a loaded magazine, even if not firmly inserted, qualifies as loaded.

But you could certainly have a concealed, unloaded pistol on your person, even if it would be very easy to grab the magazine and load the pistol.  Heck, you don't even need to separate them in pockets; you could have one of those holsters that also incorporates a magazine carrier, and keep the loaded magazine in the carrier, an inch from the pistol.

The word "license" 3rd definition - Latitude of action, especially in behavior or speech. See synonyms at freedom.

Permit comes from permission and implies it can be denied.

Even if there's no quantitative difference especially when we're all speaking I guess one SOUNDS better to say.

error

So a license means that your latitude of action, especially in behavior or speech, can be restricted, suspended, revoked or denied.

Again, what's the difference?

I was watching the video on the NH Underground main page with Dave Riddley carrying open and being detained by the police.... and if you listen carefully, the officer say's "I just need tomake sure you have a license"  (to which a bystander corrects the officer)...

You guys are quibbling over the word license versus permit..... I'd be more worried about the fact that there are officers out there who think you need a license to begin with.  Clearly, they don't even know their own laws.

error

I'm not quibbling over license vs. permit. I'm demonstrating that there's no real difference. And you're backing me up. :)

So I guess my next question is:  Do I want one of those Springfield Armory .45 XDs   :violent5:   or not?

Of course you do!

I want the compact version, myself. Same 4" barrel, but a shorter grip and 10 round double-stack magazine. And comes with a 13 round full length mag with the grip xTension. Cool!

One difference is that the slip of paper in my pocket says "PISTOL/REVOLVER LICENSE" not "PISTOL/REVOLVER PERMIT."

And unless you have that license, you don't have the government's permission to carry.

It's a distinction without any meaningful difference.

I just received the copy of my license/permit today.  I must agree that there is no substantive difference, merely a semantic one.  As for its odd size, it is kind of annoying.  A laminate or copy would be more long lasting.

Once my arm is better I can start carrying. ;D

Congratulations -- Will you be carrying next year on your college campus of choice or do the schools have rules about that?
